Hi All

Are there any proper studios in Tas?
Needs are a good room, a decent piano, and some of the outboard I don't have.
Console is a matter of practicality these days but that would be refreshing too.

Above all I'd love to hear from anyone in the region (I'm Northern Tas but whatever)
Very well equipped to record here but just thought I'd reach out.

An age old question this one! I'm an ex Launcestonian and had trouble finding a decent one when I was there. Did some recordings out of Scotch & Newstead school studios when i was living there but never a commercial facility.

Everyone I know who's after a good space, console, outboard etc etc will travel to Red Planet in Hobart

Red Planet is great, they have a nice sounding piano. Good console, nice outboard. Nice rooms.

There are a couple of other rooms around Hobart including one in the Avalon theatre that sounds quite good. Not sure if they have a piano.

Might be worth checking out Alanvale TAFE, last time I was there they had a very nice new Pro Tools desk and a good well treated recording space.

The challenges you're going to have is finding one with a piano (that isn't a honky tonk) and good outboard.

Plenty of people in Launnie *say* they have a studio, but in reality it's not much more than some egg cartons and a PC haha

Hi, I have recently opened up a studio in margate called zionsongs studios, 3 rooms, 1 mix control, 1 tracking room and vocal room. Good pre's, mic's and outboard gear. No piano as yet but will have one soon. http://www.zionsongsstudios.com Are you looking for a grand or upright? i have access to a few churches that have a decent piano and also could probably get into the conservatorium or the abc to record as well.... let us know if your interested...

I'll give Red Planet a call, and start building a room up here on the property.
Next question, who's the acoustics person in Northern Tas?

Alanvale TAFE is a great sounding room - ex ABC studio: no piano though - a few good Pre's, but I bring my own.

Red Planet is a OK sounding room (low ceiling: uggh) - with a killer sounding Harrison console, Piano? - can't remember what its like.. enough high end outboard to do most projects.

As Dave (Text Edifice) informs - Avalon Theatre has a huge space (have not been there though, heard good reviews)
great sounding console I believe. Not sure if it will do the tight warm sound (massive size)

If you are tracking drums etc - what do you need? Small tight space or nice big ambiance ?

Nice wide, big tall ceiling room, (4-8m high) that can be contained to sound tight with extensive killer outboard, serious quality A to D, and high end mic collection, with a great piano, and proper professional acoustic design may be impossible to find on this lovely island.

I can't find anything like the above, so I track big (drum/ambient sound) piano projects in Syd and Melb and overseas & smaller tighter projects at my studio.

If its a tight (non reverberant sound) - Red Planet would be the best for sure.

Sounds like a few Hobart visits for doing the odd thing until I get a room sorted out here.

I would imagine that no-one in Tas would be a studio acoustic designer - unless retired.

Yes, I agree the likelihood of a local acoustician is a little on the slim side, lol... But it's a very unusual place!

There's also ABC studios - they have a nice piano. Not strictly for hire but definitely available.
