It sounds huge. I put it beside a Rev 3 Prophet and was very surprised at just how close Sequential managed to make the later CEM machine sound to the SSM synth considering how different the circuits are. They do sound different but not as much as I expected.

I had a pair side by side once before and agree they both carry the prophet5 signature. I did think the SSM filter sound was fairly obvious at the same time though. I would describe it as "rubbery" or elastic! And cuter than the rev3 if that means much. I think the relation to Korgs like the Trident and monopoly can be heard. To me the rev3 sounds darker and moodier.
When you consider that an OBX-A for example uses the same Curtis ICs as the rev3 prophet, but they each sound very unique, I guess it's not surprising how much the circuit topology around the ICs defines the sound signature of the synth.

Steve, do you agree with the general "wisdom" that the Rev 2 is more desirable but less reliable?

For me personally no. I have said in the past that I prefer rev 3's because of reliability but really given a Rev 2 and a Rev 3 that have both been looked after really well I think that the reliability would be similar, the rev 3 would have an edge with being a little less old, slightly better build and having a crap power supply as opposed to a really crap power supply but the rev 3 is much easier to find parts for, the user interface is a bit easier to operate. As for the sound difference I don't really care, a Prophet is like an Odyssey, all I care about is that it sounds like a Prophet, I don't need to split hairs beyond that. It's why I never got the thing that people have about getting a White Face Odyssey with the "Moog" ladder filter. My favourite is the orange and black, it's the best built and it sounds like an archetypal Oddy.
Either Prophet will do the thing that a Prophet does best - making Prophet 5 sounds. The Rev 2 filter is really nice, if you are into that then I can see why you would pay a bit more for a rev. 2. These days it's hard to find a Prophet of either type.

Well, there is the Prophet 6
I'd be interested to know your thoughts on that Steve if you've tried one yet?

I am really looking forward to trying the Prophet 6, I am not sure if any are available in Australia yet but I suspect that it will be really good. I don't expect it to sound just like a Prophet 5 but I am guessing that it will have it's own mojo.

Vintage polys for sale !
A friend of mine just bought a Prophet 5 vers 3.2 (?) from him for a reasonabe price.

It was a Prophet 5 version 3.3 John.... From what is told about the new Prophet 6 it sounds realy good and will probably be more reliable just because it's new. It is not a replication of the Prophet 5's sound and in reality how can it as it has different oscillators, filter and envelopes....in other words it has it's own personality. Think of an old model D compared to a Moog Voyager..I'll be keeping the Prophet 5... Cheers Garry Lynch
