6386 replacement?

Postby blackfoot » Mon Dec 15, 2008 1:24 pm

Hi DIYer's, I was wondering if anyone could advise me about this device. I'm a bit dim on valve technology . It claims to be a viable alternative. http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll ... 0281814284 .Anyone have a comment ? THANKS JB

that sounds like an awful lot of money for a wiring job, and two $5 tubes.
...now if only he'd say what the $5 tubes were.....

you could probably just buy a manly T-Bar unit... which is where your guy probably got the idea from -

this uses a pair of 12BA6 tubes. costs $150 US.

it's obviously designed to replace the 6386 in the original vari-mu... however i don't see why it wouldn't work as a generic device?

use of a pair of 6BA6 tubes wired as triodes gives a very good substitute for a 6386. However the heater current is nearly doubled. It's not clear what tubes this dude is using....and you'd think he'd say.

however

could be the way to go
