Hi Adam
I been thinking of making a bunch of those for my back control room wall. Are you simply liquid nailing them on or something else?

cheers

I built an Oberheim OBXa from spare parts I had in the workshop some months back, I found another shell recently in the garage and a keyboard that will fit, and I have enough old boards that I could build another, but it is a big job to fix every fault on every old board and then calibrate the whole thing....

just wood glue, they are not hard to make, just very time consuming and messy with all the cutting and sanding, I have made 6 so far it certainly has solved the small problem I was having. make sure you use "dressed" wood, having perfect edges really helps with the alignment. its also hard to find timber that is square, or at least there are far fewer size options available.

perfect time for me to mention , we sell , stock, and install the real rpg skylines here in sydney
only stock at the moment is the white "poly plastic ones".
they are expensive for plastic ( around $300 ) but way cheaper then making your own.
and yes they work
if you need wood ( yummy.. ) they can be done but not at a sane price here in oz .
the advantage of using the rpg poly units is you can put them over your head without fear of death if somehow they fall off (ouch)
and of course rpg invented them , so you can get a known result and it happens in 30 sec
as i am sure adam will attest to making the first one is fun but after that , your ...well committed would be the right word :)

call us if your in the market - i might even lend you some to try out :)

Just finished my most successful DIY so far. 2 Channel Neve 1073/1290 mic pre. Haven't actually used an original but many jaws have dropped from fellow engineer's and a few have asked me to build them one. Well I won't cos it's probably a little unethical to make money from a design that's not mine.
In fact my DIY projects are sounding as good in not better than my Brand gear.

I'm almost finished my Poor Man 670 Vari Mu Compressor. Sounding amazing from what I have heard so far. Just a couple of little niggles and a tidy up should be sorted out soon.

Hi David, that looks fantastic. Where did you get the boards (schematic, etc) from?

Indeed, even though most drummers are indeed blockheads, I dont think actual blocks falling their actual heads would help with their playing at all. The ones I made are as heavy as ####, but mine are on a side wall and they are bolted in to the studs pretty hard, the individual blocks are just glued to the base and to each other, I have tried pulling on one and it wasn't going anywhere. but above head thats a whole different ball game. the foam and plastic ones would be much better.

as for cost for wood ones, they cost about $250 (in tasmanian oak) in parts and then about 3 hours of your time, a day for the glue to dry, a day for each coat of stain/varnish and so on. so yes committed is the word.

PS the one I made follow the same prime number formula as the real ones.

All the info from these builds are on the Prodogy forum. The Poorman case I purchase of Pursua and the others I design with Front Panel Design and send off to Front Panel Express.

I'm a big fan of the original GSSL without the turbo. The poorman has a great warm valve sound and compresses very smoothly
Can't wait to here the API's.

Good call Chris.
I know that one - Blackbird Studios C room. Don't jump around too much in that room.

This one is quite modest - http://www.mavericksrecording.com[/img]

Adam,
I've looked at some DIY diffusers also..
Seem to be the way to go. Which formula did you use?
Rick, what prices are on your diffusers?

Interesting that the ones in the mavericks pictures have a space between each block, rather than flush against each other.

looks like they were no too keen on putting them overhead either.

Yeah well I've decided I'm going to go with the RPG stuff in my new room (if our new house ever gets finished), had a browse on thier site last night, will need to do a bit more reading but it all looks ok and as long as it works well I'll be happy.

I'm not a real DIY sort of guy, would rather not have the frustration, even though I love wood mmmmm. Last time I was at TurtleRock Rick showed me some of the RPG stuff he had and it looked good enough for what I need.

Anyway gives me time to save up as our builders are pretty damn slow, hmmmm I guess if I'm sticking the stuff to the walls that sort of counts as DIY, does'nt it? :)

If it were true DIY you would be growing the tree from sacred seed's of the Amazon placed in soil cultivated my Tibetan Monks.. The wood would be cut on the Summer solstice then sanded by and varnished according to teachings from ancient Druids.

tim.. prices move about with the economy but they are around $300 each , you will need 3 in almost any room before you hear what they do , bigger rooms , need more etc, but they are amazing

That's not too bad at all Rick. I know I'm gonna need way more than 3 though. Farout I've already got 2 albums lined up to do and..................... oh well.

Check this out for a room which could use a few of them. :) This is on my cousins property a genuine WW2 air raid bunker, 1 of the bands I'll be mixing for rehearse in here, no reverb needed, heh.

The band are thinking of trying to turn it into a studio, very very expensive goal though, only about 3-4 hundred panels needed.

At Camden airport sort of in my cousins back yard, the whole airport land was thiers up until after ww2, I only saw it for the first time a few weeks back, when they said they had a bunker I thought, "oh cool a little bunker on the property", but yeah this is no small bunker, heh, it's about 50-60 ft long and 3 or 4 m high. With a band rehearsing in there with a PA as well ummmm yeah you get the picture.

I pretty much said they could record 50 albums for the cost of turning this place into a studio, but being young and keen the guys still have dreams of doing something with it one day, crazy young people. :)

But yeah mostly my cousins just use it to have nice noisy parties, the noise won't bother anyone from in there.

Its already got a 'trendy bar' - Camden Hotel.
They knocked down the Irish pub Molly Maguires (that I worked in runnning the open mic nights for 4yrs) and turned it into a "trendy inner city pub"..
Lost all the vibe now..
