Welcome to the Malone fan club.

I'm not saying the BA JLM1:4/99V combo is the last word in mic pres, but I'm yet to find something I don't like about them.

damn barney, that looks killer.

i hired a four pack of ba pre's from joe over the weekend, and yes, they are absolute killers. i ran kick drum, snare drum, guitar cab and bass cab through them and they all sounded great.

so barney, how do i become one of your friends and get you make me some pre's...

Yo Toddddddddd

That's EXACTLY what I use my 4xBA's for, too! Well, I also use them for vocals and anything else that needs the rock'n'roll touch. If there's more guitars, I'll DI the bass through my DI JOE box which uses the same input tranny and gets something of the same sound.

The good news is that the BA kits are relatively easy to build - time and patience is the key, but there's heaps of Turtlerockers who've done BA builds and who can help you. Go on, give it a go!

Todd,
If you have basic knowledge i'm sure you'll be able to follow the info on the boards and on joe's site. Plus he's super helpful and good about emailing with q's. I'm about to start four more in the API kinda style.
Go for it.

i've just ordered some VU buffer pcb's from joe, and i'm pretty sure i'd like to do a dual baby animal pre next up!

a little bit daunting, though i am fine with the assembly side, the technical side of which kit to buy and which transformers etc is the scary part

could anyone reccomend which kit to go for? 2 channels and more clean than rock is probably what i'm after, don't need a stack of gain as its mostly condeser mics that will be put through it

i get cost price on most components availalbe from jaycar so i could save some coin there but it may not be worth the hassle. getting the complete kit may be easier

any help would be tops!

You could buy the two channel pre kit and get one channel with the 99V opamp and the other channel with the hybrid and see which one you like better (hybrid opamp is about $30) and is also changeable from Class A or AB. Or even use an OPA2604 for less expense. With or without the output transformer. And for the sake of sifting through the jaycar catalogue it is easier to order the pre in one go IMHO.

FWIW, I'd go for the 99V opamp - its a little extra but entirely worth it.

So far as the trannies go, the Lundhal is probably the best bet for a clean sound, but I'd stick with the old JLM1:4 personally. Alternatively, hang around for the transformerless BA(N) which is designed for transparency.

Leave off any output tranny for now. You can get an extra 3db by wiring one in 1:2 configuration, but with condensors that is not going to be any issue.

So far as components are concerned, don't bother. Barney is spot on in saying that buying the kit saves a lot of hassle and delivers a known result. And the little gold pin sockets aren't a Jaycar item.

These are really a snap to build and great fun to use in almost any configuration you'd care to name. And there's many here to help if you get stuck!

i think i'll go for the basic BA2 kit, with the parts, a 99v and the front panel and knobs etc

may cost a few hunge but worth it to have a good working model and also a good entry into it all i think

gotta make my VU meters up first... will keep you all posted about how that goes

as soon as i have completed my pair of SSL 9k's, i'll be adding a pair of BA's to the same case, running off the 48vdc from the 9K psu.
that saves a few bucks, not requiring a casse or psu.

i've got a range of trannies (thanks rick!) and a range of DOA's to play with, so that's gonna be fun fun fun.

it certainly looks the simplest of kits, and i don't see any reason to part-pick through jaycar when Joe at JLM has already put together such great value kits.

i hope your build goes well!!!
