so.... I've finished soldering and I'm about to put an expanded boss DC-2 chorus pedal kit into a rack.... but before I do, I'm looking for a set of 4 switches in a row, where they interact mechanically so that only one is pushed in at a time.

I'm not sure what the 1176 uses, but for what I want to do, they need to be DPDT.

any ideas where I can get one of these things in sydney?

I suppose I can order overseas, but I want them sooner rather than later......

also, switched pots with SPDT switches in 100k and 500k linear track would be really nice, too.

I couldn't find them in the farnell catalogue either.
and that was searching through the whole pushbutton switches section.

I could look in RS, but I find their site autistic, and can never even find stuff I know they have. letalone stuff I don't know they have.


it's driving me crazy cause I'm *sure* I've seen them around. (actually was really surprised I couldn't see them at jaycar or DSE)

I'm not looking for anything dimensionally identical to anything else... not building a lookalike clone. I just have a box I could put together right now with 4 separate toggle switches, but would really like to replace them with this kind of assembly, if it's at all possible to get.

What about a Rotary Switch?
Not as nice, but it'll do the job.

Buy a cheapo av selector box off ebay and tear the switches out. Locally Dickies/Jaycar etc should have something?

hmm.... yeah, I suppose rotary switch could give me an alright panel layout and a sensible interface. though toggle switches aren't unusable either... I'll have to think about the 3P4T rotary from jaycar. I'm pretty sure that should work.

I just can't believe a simple pushbutton assembly like this is so esoteric.
and the same for a switched pot with SPDT rather than SPST....

I'll have a bit of a look for an AV selector box, though with that I don't know if the switch assembly inside it is OK for my purposes until after I paid for it and opened it up.

seems it might be almost worthwhile veroboarding something that does the 4 way switch and the 2 pot switches with digital logic and analog switch ICs. though if I want to go to that much trouble, I may as well just grab a set of switches off the link I posted...

Apologies, RS seem to have dropped them from their catalogue. I bought some interlocking switches from them last year, they were perfect for a Prism-type preamp I was building. I recall getting them from RS, because an extensive search before that revealed no other supplier in this country that I could find.

their website is useless for knowing what they have available, however i've bought mechanically interlocking pushbutton switch assemblies from them in the past.

You'll need to talk to them and get them to puzzle out exactly what bits you'll need as the assembly is comprised of separtely ordered parts. ie the switches, the mounting rail, the interlock bar, etc etc

then you'll have to work out how to put it together. You'd think there should be a simpler way, but unfortunately demand for these sorts of switches is pretty low these days. The modern designer would program a microprocessor reading some tact switches and driving a CMOS FET switch IC....

well, I went into DSE the other day and found the switch box.
does indeed look like it will do the switching I want, though not happy with the space the switch arrangement will take up.

The more I think about it the more I feel like it's worth waiting for the pushbutton gang. if I go with toggles or a rotary, I know I'll always regret it.

now I'm not sure if it's worth mucking about with switches plus, or just give up and order the thing I know will work from online. I could have it in the post tonight....

Hey Julian, I found a few switches similar to what you are looking for in a grandma style organ that I found on the side of the road..

One of those crappy hammond style or bontempi style organs..

As for my dilema - I ended up faffing about for a few days this week, then I ordered a set of bits and pieces from switches plus. mostly cause I wanted to see what they're like to deal with.

I should have them soooooon.

right... well I have the parts here, as recommended by the guy I spoke to.

I can see how the switches fit into the mounting rail with the interlock bar..... but what I can't see, is how on earth the "spring" they supplied for the interlocking bar attaches to anything...... letalone attaches to anything in a way that it'll put sideways pressure on the interlock bar.....

though it looks like this particular assembly is going to require a PCB of some sort (lets hope these pin spacings in the mounting rail are a nice multiple of 0.1") to hold it together, and a the spring will be held in place with one of the panel mount screws...
