Audio Technica ATM63HE mod?

I was given one of these not working and was told somebody had tried doing a mod to it. I have another one working and took both apart to see the difference. The only thing different was the wiring from the xlr to transformer wiring was actually disconnected. I resoldered it back together and now it does work but output is lower and more tinny than the other one.
I have googled this mic but can't find anything about a mod for it. Can anyone help?
