Dear Abbey,

I think my wife is cheating on me.
I am a working musician and, as you would expect, I travel a lot.
I have been noticing strange things happening when I get home. Her mobile phone rings and she steps outside to answer it or, she says,
"I'll call you back later".

When I ask her who called, she gets evasive. Sometimes she goes
out with friends but comes home late, getting dropped off around the corner
and walking the rest of the way.

I once picked up the extension while she was on the phone and she got very angry.

A buddy of mine also plays guitar in a band. He told me that my wife and some strange guy have been showing up together at his gigs recently.

One night, my buddy wanted to borrow my guitar amp. That's when I got the idea to find out for myself what was really happening. I said, "Sure, you can use my amp but I want to hide behind it at the gig and see if she comes into the venue and who she comes in with". He agreed.

Saturday night came and I slipped behind my Marshall JCM800 half stack to get a good view. I could feel the heat coming off the back of the amp. It was at that moment, crouching down behind the amp, that I noticed something very strange and upsetting. One of the power tubes was not glowing as bright as the other three.

Is this something I can fix myself or do I need to take it to a technician?

based on 30 years experience in the "technical arena" i'd say the missus just needs a bias adjustment and she'll be right!

if you've checked round the back end and the glow isn't consistent then maybe the signals are hitting it a bit off to the side.

check the point of entry for indications of excessive wear? maybe someones been playing the tune in the wrong key?

See what happens when you neglect your gear.... classic stuff.

If it is not rude, may I enquire as to the ages of you and yours? I ask this only in the light of wisdom gained by myself in the half century or so I have survived. There comes a point in a relationship where you should never and I mean never look at things from the rear perspective. Those things you took for granted in times past have matured and will show signs of use. These signs of wear will vary on the amount of use or abuse you have subjected these parts too. Now if you have looked to closely into this already it may be that you have passed the point of no return. If this is the case I see no option for you except to replace that wich you have mentioned with a newer and fresher set. With Regards Norm

can't say the same for mint, rare, vintage music equipment.

It's a pitty everyone here seem to be making light of your situation.

Go get those tubes looked at immediatly.
