Hey folks,

I picked up an EV 667a broadcast mic, which doesn't seem to be working..

When I measure the continuity on the pins, there seems to be a conection between the "C" and "50 / 150 / 250 ohm" output pins (you select which output you want with a pin selector).
Does this mean there's a short in the mic?

Not sure if I'm explaining this as well as I could, but hoping someone either has an idea, or can contribute 2c worth as to whether this mic is worth paying to get fixed?

I'm working on it, but there are hardly any leads out there for info on these.
I did speak to one guy from NSW who may have a spare capsule, but could cost $200 just for the part..
These were designed for boom operation in mind, for film etc.
But I'm kinda presuming it should be a cool multi-purpose studio mic.
I'll see what else I can find out!

I've been quoted about $350 to service this mic, presuming it needs the capsule replaced.
I'm not sure it's worth forking out the bucks on seeing as I've never heard the mic in use!
If anyone has used these mic's please shoot me your 2c worth!

I would suggest that the impedance selector pins connect to a transformer on the Filter Board, so continuity just means that the secondary of the transformer is probably OK. It could, of course be shorted, but that is unlikely. On the other side of the transformer is a PCB with some electronics to do the other switching functions, so there is potential for problems there or in the primary of the transformer, or a dodgy connection, or it could be, as you suggest, a faulty dynamic element. Until it is opened up, no one will ever know.

Is it worth fixing? How long is a piece of string?

I guess it depends on how much you already have invested in it and how much you really want it in working condition. As you say, it was primarily designed for film work and the PCB etc are there to overcome film specific issues. I have no doubt it would be a nice addition to the mic cupboard, and IMO, well worth $350.00 to get it fixed. YMMV.
