LCD screen with tabs - tips?

Anyone know the trick with putting back in those LCD screens with the metal tabs that go though the pcb? I took one out of a Sony MP5 to replace the EL backlight and I can't seem to get it working fully. I've tried bending different tabs around and I get varying degrees of the full text on the screen, but still a little patchy.
Anyone got any pointers?
Thanks

Doh.
I desolder the backlight, then pull it out and slide new one in.
On my S950, it was too tricky to remove, so I desoldered and slid the new one on top of the old!

I've replaced a few 16x2 LCD's with EL back lights with standard LCD with led backlights.
If you really want you could go for VFD or OLED.. Lol
(Not sure what display in your unit, but it's something to consider.
