I guess the point is that most mp3's are listened to on average soundcards with shit speakers, or on ipods with very shit earbuds. With downloading, whether legally or not, becoming an ever more popular way of listening to music this sort of thing really can be very relevant to industry types. Why bother offering lossless compression when most people can't pick the difference, certainly saves a lot on bandwidth and storage costs.
