well, i know rick has been asked a few times to start a sub-forum/music discussion sort of thing, and it hasnt been his sort of thing.

but i just thought i'd stick some random threadling here for who ever was bored to chime in on (which hopefully doesnt get carded)...

acoustic music, new music, old music, electronic music, fusion music....if it tickles the brain cells, please post...im having a really hard time finding music which is challenging, soulful, heartfelt, or a combo of the above....

People are taking the wrong drugs, or aren't taking any, it seems I'll post some stuff later. But any recommendations would be oarsome.

Met Cosmo at a small unplugged gig when he was out here recently. Good young singer/writer who also makes films and talks at a hundred miles an hour with a Northern English accent so you have to keep saying "Sorry, what?" after a few beers.

Things I've enjoyed lately-

Christopher Hale- I checked out the record launch for this last week and it was fantastic, one of the best gigs I've seen this year. Haven't heard the record yet (I bought it but haven't played it yet) so not sure what it sounds like, but judging by the gig it should be great.

I'm still really loving the lastest Wilco record, have played it at least once a week for the past 4 months. It's just a damn good album, and a real grower. I thought it was just OK at first, but it's really grown on me.

Jamil- if you want something from left field that's pretty emotion heavy- check out this, I reckon you might like it

this is seriously good shit, the host is always on the hunt for the freshest shit...you'll hear artists and music 50 yrs ahead of most on this podcast/mix site...each graphic is a mix by a different artist...you get 2 parts, 1 mix by the host, showcasing his favourites, and then another half by the artist of choice (usually unreleased material)

hey alistair, thanks for the chiru link! i have 1 cd of traditional Korean music, which is pretty amazing, i'll have to check out this vocal tradition that chiru is part of.

certainly challenging..not sure if i have my old obtuse mind of young to be able to tolerate this sort of stuff anymore...seems like a regular freejazz band with traditional korean vocals ontop..hhaha. i cant listen to traditional freejazz stuff anymore, i like them to incorporate new textures, or for me it just sounds like the stuff that Coltrane did and dusted in the 60s!

But that's certainly the kinda stuff i like to at least give a go.

this is my idea of freejazz...Supersilent from Norway...pretty ugly and aweful most of the time, but its like alien music.

I've seen a few live shows of the Chiri thing and that helps to make sense of it- I think you might like the other incarnation of the band (Daorum i think? not sure of spelling) with is a more atmospheric take on the same thing. It's Band of Five Names if you know them, plus the Korean singer.

The style of singing is called pansori, there is a very cool documentary on it that is great just for the story, even if you don't like the music so much. I think its called Intangible Asset no. 42, but I could have gotten the number wrong.

I liked the supersilent thing, but it doesn't sound too out to my ears, maybe I've listened to too much out music! Perhaps check out Scott Amendola band, and BB&C for a live band American take on a similar vibe?

i didnt realise that noah (gunderson) did things other than his solo work...
i discovered him last year (via an american A and R guy - see there is good in A and R!) and have loved him ever since.
all his work is worth a listen
and beautifully recorded

I have been listening to Radio Paradise quite a bit. Not a bad selection of music and good variety.

im going to recommend mainly electronic, because that's what i like

Kahn (UK bass/dubstep artist) - check out his Fact Magazine mix, one of my favourite mixes ever.

Objekt (German techno/bass artist)

EPROM (Sanfran bass/rap artist)

Tyler The Creator (rapper from Odd Future, wierd, kookie sort of stuff)

Niyaz, and Vas (Californian classically trained duo, singer with Persian/Indian background....surreal early music/folk style stuff, while Niyaz is the same with an electronic production tinge)

Tzolk'in (insane industrial, dark ambient, trancey sort of stuff, seriously beyond description) Their releases on Ant Zen are phenomenal. Anyone who's a fan of percussion rituals, should def check it out...incredible influences from Mayan history too!

Balkansky (check out an album callled Kuker, Bulgarian drum and bass/dubstep artist) that album in particular is really greatly produced, almost "hifi electronic music" if there is such a thing, it's so well engineered, deserves a mention, it even won an award in his country for the engineering....as small as the competition might be...def deserves it!

Sphongle (duo consisting of 2 wizards, one young, one oldish, LSD advocates...massive on the psytrance circuit....write an awesome combo of psychadelic dub, with a heavy world tinge....some of the sickest electronic engineering you'll probably hear, flawless)

I did sound for Miriam Lieberman last weekend and loved her album, "This Is The Story". I'm not usually big on 'world music' but this is just good fun and outstanding musicianship, (IMHO).
