Its surprisingly easy to build, harder to not be killed playing it.

Its a standard jacob's ladder but with a MOSFET gate. The gate is switched by a zero crossing detector into which you plug an audio source - anything will do, including vocals, guitars, keys, whatever. What appears to be continuous lightning is therefore in fact pulsed on and off every time the sound source crosses from its positive to its negative cycle. The air pressure "thunder" thus has the same frequency as the sound source! No volume control, and it will always sound vaguely square waved (although it can capture a surprising amount of tone nuance).

I love the idea or harnessing lighting and thunder as a musical instrument, but the logistics of actually playing it live are a bit out of my league - more Jarre territory. I'll stick with theremins.
