I want one of these, I'm guessing they're not cheap.

Before they were foisted on us by Apple, did anyone ever actually ask for a touchscreen? With no tactile feedback such as buttons with edges, I'm always making mistakes. My Samsung phone is marginally better than the iPhone I used to use, but not by much.

So I have to disagree... I so don't want one.

Really? I've long thought (since I first saw POS terminals with touch) that they would one day be fantastic as a controller for a DAW. I think that day has come.

I watched the video, and though I find it hard to watch slate himself, it was an interesting product.

I had two really main thoughts about it.

1. It is kinda cool, does some very clever things, and if you had a business where you needed those really clever things you would be all over it. Because of the productivity improvements, think big tractor type lawnmower vs push for mowing a golf course.

2. Its just not for me.

Its still seems to be a closed system for their softwares.
Once bought, usually things like this lose their value at an alarming rate.

I still think the future is the ipad - the amount of software being written by thousands of nerds all over the planet.

Controlling automation and routing systems on various vintage consoles, advance midi apps working over wi-fi, remote editors for vintage synths, writing apps for music, multitrack editors, highly complex synths, advanced midi arpeggiator's over wi-fi, chord analysis software, peterson strobe tuners, live console control, protools control, digital patchbay external control - and so on.
The amount of already really creative software available for the ipad is astonishing - and amazingly good.
The size/portability of it is great.

As it evolves, it will be much more sensitive and allow gesture based control. Its only a matter of a year or so at the rate of current tech evolution.

I can imagine going from one studio to the next with my Ipad talking to the consoles and DAW's, play all of their midi keyboards - and simultaneously controlling multiple apps - control the outboard etc. maybe even stream audio directly from the studios A to D's.
Good on Slate though - at least he's thinking outside the box.

Current touchscreen applications seem to reflect old approaches to things. Like mimicking a keyboard with button presses. I watched my friend using her Andriod with swipe-typing. Now that was impressive! Clearly it took some getting used to but its an approach that takes advantage of the touchscreen technology.
