Solti was one of the greatest - known colloquially as "The screaming Skull" - quite a taskmaster apparently, but his recordings of Wagner are legendary.

The chief engineer / producer for Decca at the time was John Culshaw who features prominently in this snippet

Also watched part of a related video and they say his recordings of Wagner sold 100 million records. Wow! That's what I call the good 'ole days! Lol.

Yeh, the whole doco is extraordinary and chronicles the entire process - Culshaw was a genius and knew exactly how to bring the best out of the musicians - like Solti he knew the score backwards - every nuance..

Solti's energy and intensity is beyond description - no wonder this recording is so critically acclaimed.

ha! I'm surprised that they would have done a gag like that.

I suppose after that epic achievement of recording that 4.5 hour opera, a little light heartedness would be welcome!
