Prophet 5 rev 3.3

Postby chrisp » Wed Jun 10, 2020 9:47 pm

It’s been lying in a garage for two decades and not switched on. What should I watch out for, or is this something for the professionals? If so, anyone want to take it on?

I would say one for the pros.
They can (will) be an awful lot of work... I have one here that needs regular attention.
For starters, if it hasn't been switched on in all that time, I wouldn't power it up without first disconnecting and taking some readings of the PSU itself, and maybe see how that changes as it warms up.
You may be aware of the tantalum capacitor issue throughout the audio and control PCBs - timebombs that can take out a rare chip in a flash.
Then again those "rare chips" are being manufactured again so it is not a hopeless case.

Maybe Steve has some more helpful and practical advice!

Hey Thirteen, suggestions? Or would you take this on?

Happy to repair it if it's in Melbourne, strangely enough I have a Prophet 10 in at the moment that has been sitting in a road case for that long and of course nothing works and 2 months ago I restored a Rev 2 that has also been left unused for about that long.

I'd get Steve to look at it, he's got more experience than any of us on this kind of stuff!

Is the rev 3.3 from Travis? If so, interested to hear about the job and what was involved.

Hi All,

Hoping it’s okay to piggyback onto this thread and see if any Turtlerock members have a P5 they might want to sell.
Happy to look at fully working, mostly working or not working units

Hi Harry
I'm currently babysitting a rev 3.2 (upgraded to 3.3).
The LFO is a bit temperamental, and the keys are intermittent when not played for a while. I last cleaned the bus bars about 18 months ago, after which of course the keys played beautifully. Bushings were replaced maybe 8 years ago or so. DAC was replaced a few years ago, and the odd OTA chip has been replaced over the years.
There might be a few scratchy pots here and there, but essentially it is fully functional and sounds great.
I use it in my current recordings (ext CV and gate to trigger one voice, and play over the top).

The owner who lives OS is happy to sell, but it won't be cheap!
