DAW to DAW recording without leaving the digital domain?

Postby Drumstruck » Fri Sep 20, 2019 3:47 pm

Is there a way to do this?

Background:
- I have 2 albums of music composed in Finale 25
- both use 96K/24bit samples (top of line samples from Soundsonline)
- Finale only exports at 44.1K/16bit
- I want the .wavs at 96K/24bit

Is there a way to use 2 computers without leaving the digital domain? i.e playback in Finale in one computer - record in DAW in another computer.

I don't want to go digital-.analog->digital through 2 convertors if I can avoid it.

Thanks

Thanks Peter,

I thought spdif was limited to 48KHz, but AES between 2 convertors is one option (if the signal path stays clean and digital).

Another option is a digital mixer - but I was hoping some of the knowledgeable guys here might give me a light bulb moment.

Is there any point to transferring 16bit/44.1k files into a 96k system rather than exporting and upsample converting?

The point is getting confused here.....

My Finale scores are all at 96K/24bit and I want to keep them at 96K/24bit.

Finale export won't achieve that so I need to play them in Finale and record them in a DAW in real time (i.e. machine to machine).

Perhaps Dante is the answer?

What about a tool like loopback https://rogueamoeba.com/loopback/ or jack http://jackaudio.org/ ?

Can Finale export an EDL, OMF or AAF that could be opened in the other DAW?

I guess Finale is Mac only, but in Windows there are a few companies make VSTs that can record the output of a channel or bus, perhaps one of them does a Mac version?

Thanks guys.

For those unfamiliar with Finale - it is a composition tool (i.e. manuscript) - it is similar to Sibelius.

It runs on Mac or Windows and generates audio from the manuscript via MIDI (using samples e.g. Eastwest, Native Instruments).

It can use samples up to 96KHz / 24bit by using the Play (Eastwest) or Kontakt (NI) engines but it only exports at up to 44.1KHz/16bit (a real pita).

Anyway, the best answer for me appears to be Dante for machine to machine (digital to digital) mixdown (audio over IP) at 96K/24bit - then I can see a mastering guy to finish the job for me.

fwiw I ended up with an SSL Nucleus2 plus an 8-port GB switch and am running DVS (Dante Virtual Soundcard) on both Macs.
