What are peoples recomendations for something (Prefer Rack mount) for 2 channel Analogue -> SPDIF.

Mic Pre's are fine, but to be honest, not that important.

I know there are some kick arse converters out there , but my budget is not that great for this, so prefer less than $500.

Your insights will be greatly appreciated.

In your price range (pre-owned) a Roland MMP2 mic pre or a Focusrite pre (Trakmaster) with the digital card option, a Roland M-1000 mixer (which also has a master clock I/O).

New, a Ta@#$% US1641 will give you a fair amount of flexibility and is rackmount:

Most cheaper A/D interfaces nowadays are either USB or Firewire based.

Consider whether you may achieve the same result with a PC-based sound card (way cheaper).

Look out for a used mindprint di/port. Its a 2 channel ad/da 24bit with spdif or optical, pretty decent mic pre's, headphone amp and mix between analog input and digital input. excellent little box I've used for years alongside my mbox's for better pre's and converters. With the new macbook pro's it can be used as a complete 2 channel interface as they now have optical spdif i/o.

I'm looking to use a converter with my 'tools' rig. When we track, (Electronic music with hardware) we pretty much record everything at once, so 2 extra tracks, even if they are just recording a sub mix of FX etc would come in handy.

I've actually got a roland digital mixer, that I have used in the past for spdif, but It's not ideal having two mixers, and real estate is something i'm seriously lacking right now.

I'm already using an Alesis AI3 for the adat part.

Even though it's a censored word, I remember back in the day be!@#$%^& had a 1RU 2Channel Mic pre with digital out? I just can't seem to find any reference to it.. Does anyone know the model?

Ok, So be!@#$%^& do the Ultramatch 2496 thing that will do what I want..

There is also the DBX 386 - More pricey..

Has anyone got a Ultramatch they'd wanna sell? lol. there is one on ebay starting cheap at the mo.

Does anyone have much experience with the DBX-386? The SOS review seemed pretty good, but that was in the year 2000.

I had a quick look, and it's only mono in right? I need something that has Analogue Stereo -> Spdif.

I have a 386 and I love it....big fan of it on acoustic guitars and vox....The separate digital and analogue output gains are great, come in very handy....

A bit over your budget but........... not only do you get a pair of great converters but you get a great wordclock to slave the rest of your digital gear from. Would just make life easy too knowing you're getting something very reliable.
