I got a request from a friend to help him with an art installation for children with special needs.

Basically, at first, he wanted many photo-eyes triggering different midi events... (This would be conected to ableton, triggering samples)

This I could do, but it is not the most elegant solution to his problem.

I was thinking that a camera feeding a computer, with the image broken up into a say , 8x8 or 16x16 grid.. anything bright in the grid fires off a midi note.

I'm not that well versed in these sort of things, but is MAX something that could do this? Does anyone know what would? Anyone know anyone who would write something for this?

He's obviously willing to pay anyone for their time / programming etc.

i would put money on max being able to do this, yes.

i cant do it myself, but...possibly could help put u in touch with someone....

Max definitely does this. I've done lots of things with max though not this. I have seen it presented though and could certainly put you in touch with a few people who can do it. Actually any max programmer could do it with a bit of research. You will need to sort out how many cameras how many triggered events etc. Also consider what triggers what, max can read colour, brightness, movement etc. Max is THE program for this kind of stuff though.

I know a few people on that list and the ones I don't, well if there anything like the dorkbot crew here in melbourne they will definitely be able to sort you out. In fact they've probably already done what you're planning and will have patches/programs that they can adapt to the particular installation.

It is also well and truly possible in processing. How's your C++ programming
though? It's not exactly C++ but it's very similar. I've used it to create visuals
from FFT analysis. It's good fun.
