Hi everyone,
Jock H here introducing myself.
I'm a bit of an 80's dance and post-punk fiend based in brunswick, melbourne. At home I've got a JLM 6slot api lunchbox, with a tg500, dual99v500, nv500, peq500 and hpm headphone mixer, all through a rme fireface400 which goes pretty well.
looking forward to sharing/getting tips from you guys!

Hi Jock,

Welcome aboard! Turtlerock is a great forum! I myself am a fringe dweller, not technically in the industry. But love recording music.

A few things. The unofficial currency of the turtlerock forum is Iced Vovo's...but it's kinda being challenged my minties at the moment. But if you want to make a low ball offer on a piece of equipment - I suggest Iced Vovo's.

The other thing is you need to put your full name and city/location in your signature. Part of da rules I'm afraid.

And....how is that JLM PEQ500 like? I've only used a bomb factory plug of the pultec and really loved the silky smooth bottom end. I've been considering one of those JLM for a little while now. But there's a long list.

I've got myself a little lunchbox with API gear. 512c, 550B and 527's. Pretty cool stuff.

Anyway like I said earlier Welcome to Turtlerock! They are great guys here!

P.S. DO NOT under any circumstances mention Macguyver to Mat Robins...

just edited the signature, so hopefully that comes up all fine and dandy. the peq500 is brilliant, especially as i can just switch any of the pres through it at will. I can't speak highly enough of the JLM gear!
I'm a hands-on kinda guy when it comes to gear, and am not a huge fan of digital mucking around! i have an old minikorg700 keyboard from the early 70s and have found that has stayed with me while all the others over the years have been through a revolving door.

Welcome to the forum jock, perhaps you'll join us at the melbourne t-rock convention? us melbournites have to band together.

Little side note, have either of you used the GPultec or the other clones out there? Theres a lot of info on building them and they sound fantastic. Can build one for 1/2 to 2/3 the price of a jlm module and you make it yourself. just saying...

No I haven't heard them. I think I saw some pictures from Nick of nfaudio on his blog of his build. Was kinda hungry for more info. Was the tube in the original pultec just used for make up gain. (I'm completely ignorant of how these things work). Is his unit stereo or mono.

...but anyways..

I barely have enough time to get into the studio to make music as it is. Making the gear too would just take away from making music.

I love the idea though! Saving cash, buying parts and making it. I'd probably stuff it up though. Haha. Last time I solded something I was in high school.

Absolutely know what you mean. Those people who know me will attest to me having too many electronics projects to finish especially considering my rather heavy production load. I think last year I produced/engineered something near 20 albums, composed/performed a couple of theatre works, Performance/Sound Artists on a USA tour, the museum installation with Chris, built/racked a few pieces of gear, toured SE asia (holiday who would have believed?) and started a few more albums.

Electronics though gives me something else to think about instead of music whilst still being productive. And yes the first few builds I did I required extensive support. Now I only need major support and a few friends. ha...

All that and you still have time for a BBQ this sunday.. your a talent Myles.

Yikes, man you are busy!

I think it's quite romantic making the equipment though! You know, really getting down to know the equipment. Changing out transformers for different flavours. It'd be pretty exciting knowing that you could tweak or make your gear to get cool new sound shaping devices.

Maybe one day I'll get into it. Like I said. I love the idea!
