Good or not?

Obiously not as good as others but is it a good cheap first ribbon mic?

They are a very nice mic for the money, I've used mine as a mono room mic on drums, close mic on guitar cab and also on acoustic guitar. Very nice sound, on the drum kit it handled everything nicely, had lots of low kick, captured the snare nicely and had a nice amount of highs for symbols. On guitar it was a nice compliment to dynamics and condenser to fill in the sound.

For the price you can't beat them I'd say.

I can post some audio samples of it in use if you want?

I bought 2 for a particular session and one of them was broken when I unpacked it, which was annoying. I learned to check gear BEFORE a session even if it's new thanks to Carilion . It sounded great on my Marshall. Still testing it though?

I have a couple I use a bit. Mostly on guitar amps as second mic, with good results. I have throw it on all sorts of other things like vocals, percussion, acoustic guitar and a few brass instruments. One of the best things I have found for it though is recording random object to use for samples. It's nice enough to grab a interesting texture of a sound, while being cheap enough that I am not scared of blowing it up, which I haven't yet(famous last words).
I think the best test is, if I break it would I replace it with the same... Yes I would.

we have a few.. i even use them live......

there cheap and good.. buy one.

That seems to be a pretty resounding 'yes, they are quite good'

Seems I'll have to get one and find out. While we're here, any others I should look at?

Kristian: that would be amazing If you could!! Any chance of hearing it on the cab with and without the dynamic? So I can hear what it's adding?

I did a quick google to see which mic this was and the carillon axis 70 page links back to another thread at turtlerock, under the guise of look what they are saying...

I have an alcatron version of this mic and it does work pretty well on guitar cabs and such.

On a serious note, I don't know what others think but if they didn't ask Rick's permission I think It's a bit rude of them to put that link in their web page.

Hey, I haven't had a chance to mix the Dynamics and Ribbon together yet, but i have uploaded the raw files from the drum track with just the ribbon and also of the guitar cab with the ribbon and one dynamic. The Dynamic up is an Audix I5, i also used a Shure SM57 but didnt get a chance to upload it.

There you go, i just uploaded the SM57 track as well to reference and mix with, might give a better comparison between the ribbon and a dynamic as everyone seems to use the SM57 on guitar more then an Audix I5

The axis seems to have more detail over the audix. It's definitely darker, it could also be that I'm making it up in my head... I'm away from my computer at the moment but I'll compare it to the 57 tonight.

Does anyone think that getting an old vintage ribbon like a reslo or rca something would be worth getting? A few cheapies on the bay atm. Or would I be better getting some decent condensers?

I love the ribbon, it has such a nice sound to it when mixed in with some others. Im at a similar conundrum, I can't decide whether to buy another ribbon for a stereo pair for rooms or drum over heads or buy a pair of condensers for drum over heads as I don't have a pair yet.

how much are we talking about for these mics?

Did this for a live recording a few years ago. The fig 8 was a Rode K2 and the centre mic was an AKG 451, positioned over the drummers head. Worked quite well.

That has been a common method for many years, a Beyer M130 and M160 gives you a figure 8 and a cardioid, ribbon pair.

I've done this plenty with both royer and chinese stereo ribbon mics. excellent sound and can of course be varied significantly by altering the balanced of the 's' signal. Wide in the verses, punchy in the choruses. On a side note I've also used M/S for live recording and find it especially useful for classical performances when there might be more than one ensemble often a different location on stage. Rather than having to move the mic for each differently placed ensemble, a stereo ribbon mic (so two fig8 capsules) can be used as MS when facing one direction and blumlein when facing another. Its about positioning the mic so that the stereo field is centred on both ensembles with the different configuration. Has worked very well several times.

Just bought 2 of these! Tracking Guitars and Bass next weekend so it'll be a good test. Thank you to all who replied, made the decision quite an easy one. Used one the other day on guitars about 1m from the cab with a 57 off axis. Wow...
