Hey guys - can some help me with where do you get the sticky tape (or whatever) to put on your desk to mark who's doing what track? Something that doesn't leave residue preferably ..... I spent ages getting old tape sticky muck off my previous desk and don't want that problem again.... strips of paper tend to move around too much..... ta

The stuff you want is called "Labeling and Cover-up Tape" and it's made by Post-it.

No residue and good to write on

here's a little tip if you'd like Ian.... Get 4 different colours and then make red - drums, yellow - guitars, blue- vocals etc etc.
It's an extra visual on your channels.

That would be great for my colour blind assistant, it would mess with his head even more than when I ask him to plug in the coloured multi core

fyi I'm also red/green c/blnd .... coloured snakes give me hell when it's dim (like everywhere you have to crawl when your plugging.....) - luckily most of 'em are different shades so I stick with the sequence white>yellow>red>lght blue>dk blue>3 x pot luck>black - the upside is that all traffic lights are green.

Personally, I use 1cm masking tape, but make sure that it is proper masking tape, not the packaging tape that looks similar.

I've always used white or light grey electrical tape. Has to be good quality though or it'll leave residue after a while. Nitto is the best. Great for lead rolling too.

Never understood why people use electrical tape for coiling leads. Very wasteful, always ends up gunky and collects crap and is stupidly fiddly. The simple velcro tabs are quick, reusable, stay on the cable and are always available, leave no residue and dont collect gunk if used correctly (for some reason loads of people use the velcro with the hook side out which picks up fluff but if you use them with hookside in then no fluff).

Back on topic though, electrical tape is great for desk markups and if it does leave junk a little ethanol and its gone.

Agreed. The velcro strips are great for leads...got them on everything!

Because in the absence of velcro there is still electrical tape? It's also fast and less fiddly. I have done crewing work on hundreds of shows, for pretty much all the major touring companies, they've all used leccy tape!

I think you can buy a big roll of cable tie at the larger hardware shops.

Velcro ties are good but they're frightfully expensive for a piece of plastic - I only use them to mount the custom made snakes to the rack on my electronic kit.

There's a Perth crowd on Ebay who sell 20m and 30m rolls of 10mm and 15mm velcro quite cheaply. I've bought several rolls and been very happy. I can't remember their name sadly (and can't access Ebay at work).

They target the IT server market, so search under "Server accessories". (In general, looking under the IT Server area is good practice because there are loads of useful rack accessories to be found there.)

Every single lead in my studio now has velcro - even my firewire and usb cables, and is a pleasure to have no tangles, all is neat and organized FOREVER!

and the other thing I like about velcro is if you use a lead and it has a few metres of unused lead in a coil you can velcro the unused coil and it never creates spaghetti (like mic leads coiled under a drumkit - and behind racks)

I use 20mm masking tape for marking the console - and white electrical tape for labelling outboard and leads that are permanently wired.

Releaseable Cable ties are available from Element14 (Used to be called Farnell).

The magnetic metallic labels they sell on eBay seem like a good idea (if you have a metal label area !)
