I have been asked to help someone set up PC laptop usb rcording / monitoring set-up.
(as good quality as is poss /but cheap, cheap,cheap!!)
Being a Mac only guy, I am not 100% up on what choices will work with a PC - and USB
I would have liked to have steered him to a 002 - or 003 / but no USB for these.
Can anyone suggest a Motu / or RME type of box (even second hand) that will do the job - will be running with cubase.
maybe 2-4 mic/line inputs - headphone out/ monitoring etc.
under say $600?

my Native Instruments Audio Kontrol 1 is....cheap as f@#$... (use it on my laptop only, not my main set up)

connect any good mic pre into it..and it sounds fine imo. i did a test with a good pre, just using its conversion..sounds great.

The MOTU is excellent.

I have a Focusrite Scarlett 18i6 that I carry with the laptop (running Cubase) when I'm travelling, they're about $300 ish. Good sound (for the price), comes two Hi-Z inputs and two mic preamps that are surprisingly good (for the price). Decent mix/routing software, plus has hardware knobs for headphones and monitors.

It ain't an RME obviously, but if you want "cheap but usable" it's well worth a look.
