Hi all,

Seeking some advice on which brands / coatings are good and wheredoyougetit?

My device wants normal speed (1x - 4x) or high-speed (4x to 10x) CD-R media .....

I've been using Taiyo Yuden discs from day 1... did lots of research before deciding on using them exclusively. I error test every disc i burn (masters and refs) and get consistently very low error rates.

available at xtreem technology in melbourne, not sure where else. often branded as "THAT'S", made in japan.

I've been using Prodisc Premium White CD blanks for over 5 years without a single problem. Expensive but absolutely worth the money to me.
They're based in Sydney so you're supporting your countrymen. Great service too...

well i have used everything under the sun .. currently using silver inkjet verbatim from .. wait for it .. office works

different brands and batches do different things with my testers so by the time you read this it could be nonsense and i am on to something else
but right now they are as good and probably better then anything i have ever used ..

the white ones were shit .. go figure

I have used prodisc for years too .. good stuff !

i actually get mine all printed up "professional like" from regency.
same place inertia then use to actually press all my releases.
i get them by the 1000, and havnt had a problem yet

Can I assume you gents are talking CD-RW (rather than CD-R?)

most of the CD-Rs on the market are spec'd as 48x / 52x etc (i.e. ultra-high speed) - I have some Sony 52x that pass the write test in my 8x CD Duplicator but then they fail to copy....

I remember "they" marketed Java (language) as "write once / read anywhere" .... when it reality it was "write once / test anywhere" ....

Think I'd better do some testing .....

I would say your burner or software is suss. I leave it up to Nero to decide what speed to burn at and almost never get failures on any media I've ever thrown at it.

I think you may be right Kurt - but no software, it's just a CD copier - the target drive may need replacing but I won't know until I try it with lower speed media....

When my CD mastering doover arrives I'll test it with high speed / ultra speed media and see how it goes - the will purchase some of the name brands mentioned above

Interesting ... I just tried some Verbatim 52x CD-Rs and they worked like a charm

(so the copier is OK - into the rack it goes.

I buy from PCX in North Ryde, and lately for anything that needs a life span greater than a few plays I like the Mitsui Gold Archive grade

$210 for 100, but 300 year life span (estimated) and lower errors.
They do a lot of other media at PCX and prices are very good

I think it depends what you're going to use them for. If it's for short term storage, then buy the verbatim's or similar, but if you want long storage, then go the archive type Alastair mentioned.

I recently transferred data from CD-R's that were 10 yrs old. Half of them wouldn't read properly even though they've been stored in cases out of sunlight because they were regular CD-R's back in the day. Managed to get most of the data off them, but it took many attempts and a long time. If you need to keep stuff, pay the extra money!

We use them all the time, burn at fastest possible speed and have no problems playing them on our Denon CD players, which are as finicky as can be with cd burns, and increasingly, commercial cd releases.
Are commercial cd releases getting worse for error rates? It seems that way to me..

i'm gearing up to go back to mono vinyl myself

Another plus for Taiyo Yuden.

Also I've had a lot of success over the years with TDK gold.

Does anyone else remember that long-running stouch played out in the pages of Mix Magazine between Stephen St Croix (pro-Mitsui, as I recall) and TDK?
