What is the best way to number label snake cables without damaging the cables but making them easy to read? Could I use white electrical tape at each end and use a marker to number them or will the glue effect the cables over time? I understand there is a colour code but my client is a musician. What should I do?

If you don't want tape gunk on the cable you can wrap a twist tie around the end of the cable and then attach electrical tape to the twist tie.

I do this with my cables to avoid the gunk buildup. It also makes the tags re-usable.

A more expensive option is to get velcro tags.

Heat shrink tubing? you can remove it later with a razor blade and you can write on it pre-shrinking, or if you want to get fancy, order some online with text. No gluey residue.

those stick-on dots that are used for stocktakes etc are ok - you can write the number on them and stick them to the connector rather than to the cable.

when I was doing installs, for Audio and Visual stuff. .. we had these labels. Came from Middendorps. They were blue plastic dispensers, and had rolls of numbers in them, going from 0 to 9. so you would wrap them around the cables. Also, they made this tape stuff, that came in a dispenser, that was clear sticy with, a white square at the end. You wrote on the square, then wrapped the clear portion around. Both worked okay.

I just went and looked at their online store for you, it was next to useless. I will keep looking if I find the info I will post it.

Wiz you inspired an idea! I will use the croy machine to make tags but only unstick the ends. That way they there is minimal residue left behind. Thanks for the replies everyone.
