anyone know how they got this type of sound, what effects/recording techniques would be used

Sounds like a synth patch to me, not real vocals. could be completely wrong, but that's what it sounds like.

I was thinking melotron vocals...also maybe sampled

or maybe its just a lot of distant tracks.
if i had to try and do it right now.
id start my multi tracking like 10 takes, off mic and with something like a ribbon that wasnt bright.
edit them all to be bang on each other.
eq anything "distinctive" out of them, so its just a wash, and probably cut a lot of top end.
THEN
do a reverb send with a lexicon or TC or something similar that would get a long, BRIGHT tale.
so all that air and room comes in like they have, but from the reverb, not the direct source.
if it didnt sound right, id maybe send a mix to a speaker in the room (with the reverb on it) and mic the room.
then treat that the same way
bus it all together.

Sounds like completely normal multi-tracked vocals to me.
Take one female singer. Ask her to track multiple takes with a breathy but percussive style.
Job done.

I think I could get close to that with one singer, a TCVoiceworks and a phaser...... or not quite so close with choir on a kb and a few fx

Multi tracked,breathy and then through a Dolby-Stretch to bring out the "breathy-ness" is what I reckon

Just sounds like a breathy girl going ha ha ha and some sort of airy synth patch doubling it. Maybe a synth calliope?
