Crackle in pots - Urei 565T - lube query

Hi all,

I was just playing with my Urei 565T (Little Dipper) and the frequency select pots are a little crackly at each end of the throw - the good news is that the crackling is reducing with use, but I opened the lid (as you do) to have a stickybeak and they appear to be sealed pots.....

Could anyone advise if these pots can be lubed and what with?

With sealed pots I have always used a shoelace wrapped around the shaft a number of times then just pulled each end of the lace back and forth to rotate the pot it's full travel. Can take a while sometimes but usually works the crackles out. Jeez, Urei dippers, kepexes, did you raid a 1970's studio or something?

Thanks Andy - I'll give the shoelace trick a spin :ymhug:

haha - I'm a '70s sort of guy - the Allison/Valley gear come up locally so I grabbed it (being a big fan of FZ), and the Urei because I needed to de-ess something and it's a bit more versatile than a de-esser - turns out to be a really nice sounding unit so I'll be after another one.... OCD for pairs of things....

Hey Ian - a few years ago Rob restored 2x565's for me that had the crackle, at times this was taking out expensive tweeters on 2108 Quested monitors.
Plus I really wanted them as a matched stereo pair for mastering/stereo duties.
From memory he took the pots off and bathed them in some solution.
you may be able to de-solder the pots and send them down to Adelaide for a Jacuzzi ?
