For those who frequent(ed) TechTalk or TheLab

Some of you would have at least read about if not actually built the Green micpre's, which from memory, claims it's heritage from the Amek Mozart consoles and which has always received favourable comments from those who have built them.

"So what", you may ask.......well it is a fair bet that our newest member "peterc" is the person responsible for "producing" the infamous Green pre.

really?

so welcome peterc then. here's hoping when i get around to ordering my batch of boards the build will go sooo smooooth that all you'll hear is congratulations! i was planning a 2U case with four green pres in the next couple of months.

ausrock - have you started your pcb project yet? (was it an Gssl?) if not, i hope it's cause the fishing is keeping you out in the fresh air!

mfdu,

The short answer is "no"........lol. Unfortunately, it isn't fishing holding me back, it's a lot of hours (and for that matter $$$) being spent refining certain elements of instrument making but that's a subject for another time.

I have pcb's and other bits and pieces here for 4x Greens, definitely 1 (possibly 2) SSL comps, an 1176, La2, a Pultech EQ and a couple of G7 mics but my first priority has to be the subject of the previous paragraph.

instrument making gets more kudos than just clone building in my books.

if you ever want to offload any of the pcb's, think of me.

all the best.

I read the Green mic pre is about on par with a Digi 001 mic pre?

really? i'd be interested to read that. i think it depends on what components you build the green pre with. being DIY, you can pretty much build for colour or transperency.

i certainly wouldn't be building a preamp to be on par with a digi001 pre. i'd be aiming for colour with headroom.

let me know where you read that comparison, if you would be so kind.

'I read the Green mic pre is about on par with a Digi 001 mic pre'

sounds like an insult to me. Maybe Henry was just trying for a rise out of someone?

I read about it at Prodigy I think, a long time ago but thought so what? PPL like them because theyre very cheap to build and sound ok. But it is basically the same design as the 001 if I'm not wrong? Someone here will know more I'm sure.

Mate, you were fine. I came close to pulling the "offending" post down a peg or two at the time..........anyways, seeing I held back before, I'm letting go the reins now................

I read about it at Prodigy I think...........so this statement is made based on an "I think".

PPL like them because theyre very cheap to build and sound ok. ...........They're also usually recommended for people new to DIY as an introduction to electronics. As to "sounding OK"..........relative to what? Have you heard them yourself, or is this also based on something you think you've read somewhere?

But it is basically the same design as the 001 if I'm not wrong...........as I said earlier, they are based on the Amek Mozart (this info originates from Kev and others at TT), so if the 001 uses a similar design, then does that mean that it too is based on the Amek?

There are quite a few mic pres with "similar" topologies to the green - the Amek Mozart, 9098 & SSL 9000 mic pres are just 3 for example... so the devil is in the details - component choice, layout (PeterC's is a good layout) output driver(the 9098 has an output driver with a large orange torroidal transformer) & more.

Here's another couple of "reviews" of the green pre:

http://www.prodigy-pro.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8080
http://www.prodigy-pro.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8839&highlight=green+pre

And a comparison between a DIY SSL 9000 & a DIY Green:

Yeah, I knew someone would dig around if I dissed the Green. I couldn't be bothered but I knew if I lit my spark you 'anal' types would dig around, fuelled by righteous indignation, for me. Thanks, exactly what I wanted to know!

Half of Prodigy have built them you morons, and there is no one more particular than those guys! Must be good! hehe!

Keep up the good work, thanks!

I've just found this thread, no wonder my ears are burning.. 8)

It's a great clean mic pre, & has a large amount of headroom (well thats the way it sounds). Not a punt.... Not quite the same as the 9098 (that has an output transformer) & different from the SSL 9K project.

Thanks for the kind words, all of ya (your free samples are in the male), it's been an interesting project.

Regards
Peter

Start at PeterC's site..........http://1176neve.tripod.com/ .......then go to "The Lab" ....http://www.prodigy-pro.com/forum/index. ... cbb0d3b025 .......and do a search on the Green mic pre.

I noticed the DIY section here is getting a little musty, so I thought I'd blow the cobwebs out of this thread :)

The green has been high on my list for a while - but there's so much else to do!

For those that are interested and don't keep up to spped with goings on at the Lab, petec and another guy there (khstudio) have worked together to reverse engineer (I think that's basically what they've done) of the Eq3D, which I'd never heard of before. It was fascinating to watch this project unfold at the Lab, as guys from all over the word collaborated to make it happen. More impressive than a couple of us Melbourne based Turtlerockin' DIYers who have been gunna catch up for a while for just a bbq, and can't even organise that :)

Here's some details for those who are interested:\

http://www.prodigy-pro.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=22102

http://www.prodigy-pro.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=22102

http://www.khstudio.us/DIY.htm

I'd be interested if any of the guys here have tried this unit (i'm simply assuming Rick has/has had one at some point in time :D ) with their views on it.

...yep, the whole point of this post was the bump the DIYer's. If it wasn't for Chrisp's Kollosal Konsole, it would be very quiet...

or.....you could just buy these off me!

Image

Image

these are built up using Peter's Green Mic-Pre pcb BUT are extensively modified

the general topology of these pre's is very good, in a clean, noise free kind of way, with buckets of headroom
i've added an old school / new school switch and MS decoding or dual operation
i like the fact you can hit these with up to +24dBu ( ie line level ) and thus use the MS decode function post recording
also a selectable input Z control, including a 33K ( Hi Z ) option that disconnects the phantom and is perfect for squeezing all the tone out of a ribbon mic.
