4-5k to spend on mic and Pre

Postby walding » Fri Oct 24, 2008 11:30 am

Ok it's been a fruitful year and an upgrade is the order of the day.

What I'm looking for is high end Mic and pre so I can take the studio to the next level.

Any and all suggestions most welcome and anyone who is/has gear to sell feel welcome to email me here

radical3@gmail.com

As always much thanks in advance for your time and expertise

Mark

Ps I'd like a neveish sounding pre and a Mic with a nice bottom end (mainly for Vox but that could be used for recording strings and acoustic gtrs)

Mark,
A second hand AEA R84 and the BAE 1073 would be a great combo..
R84 $1856 @ Mixmasters
BAE 1073 $4199 @ Legacy Audio
You'll get cheaper prices than RRP though..

Really nice on acoustic gtrs and I'm sure would be nice for stringed instruments (that lovely Neve-style warmth)
Tim..

Simon
Good choices also - I was at Mixmasters yesterday and forgot about the U87 there.. but I thought that might blow the 5G budget (along with a pre)..

there is also a TLM 170, and a avalon 737, around the 5k mark, or a great river nv2. I think the great river is meant to be "neveish"

Thanks guys :D

Yea I have a great river pre and love it but I want one with EQ.

Pre's are easier to choose than the mic's but the pre's I'm looking at are either the Vintech or there is a API come up at Mixmasters(Although the Harrisons look nice as well).

Mic, well I'm still clueless as to what to choose.

I have a Neuman and a modded K2 but want something rounded and NOT hyped in the top end.

Ahhhhh

I wish I could try them out before making a choice :( Oh well I'll keep on searching and asking (I've been doing this for months now)

Mark
I bought some of the Auditronics 110A mic pres from Rob @ Broadcast..
We had a gear day at nICs in Jan and they got good ratings from everyone.
The Quad 8 MM403's took the prize on the day (IMHO) but the 110A's were right behind..

Inductor based EQ section, Jensen transformers = very sweet pres and great for the price..

If you want a great pre check out the Mercury M72, one of the best pre's I've heard for vox usually no matter what mic is plugged into it.
