It's a pretty nasty security issue, also spyware of any type is evil, tracking people's web searching habbits is pretty rude.Did you notice the link to the removal tool at sony is now a dead link too and there is no mention at all on thier web site.
Being so easy for hackers to disguise viruses and other threats with this is pretty short sighted on sony's behalf, what did they expect. If someone tried to hack into thier network there would be hell to pay.
Oh yeah Australian Idol really really sux.Glorified karaoke!I feel sorry for anyone who has had to work on that stuff.I actually had forgotten it existed. Thanks Chris! Hahaha.

Hey there Martinez
I didn't want to sledgehammer any point - I just wonder what's going on in the heads of Sony BMG management. On second thoughts, actually I don't want to know, it would be scary and kinda wierd. But these guys control at least a slice of the industry, and perhaps they are, after all, just tryin' to THINK DIFFERENT

Sorry for my tone Chris.
I know that could have come across wrong.
It does sound a bit sus to me as well.
Id like to also give my vote to australian idol sucking.
It is and embarrisment to me as an australian to watch, and thats aside from the fact that its pure unadulterated crap!

I think I am the only person that thinks australian idol is good for the industry.
My reasons being, it keeps work in australia, it gives australia studios work, it gives australian mastering houses work, it sells records to 13-16 year old girls which keeps, money spinning over and putting it away to develop other bands.
They spend so much money in Australia and people see the show as a bad thing?
How many people if offered would turn down an oz idol work in any form?
I dont get why no one else sees this. what am I missing?

I hate dickhead whats his name?
he isn't even remotely musical in any way,
and yet he's judging a singing competition.
He's just some big brother looser!
the show really hit rock bottom when they got him as a judge.

I totally agee with Simon. Forget about the actual content of the show. It's pouring truck loads of money into the TV, lighting and audio industries and keeping a host of people gainfully employed. Not to mention the musicians and singers they hire every week. It's been a long time since I've seen a band that size on TV on a regular basis.
It might not be fostering any real "talent" - well, that remains to be seen - but it is paying big rewards to our industry and that can only be a good thing.

Going back to the original link, I think its all typical of the "How much can we get away with?" mentality of big companies and governments these days. The only thing more dissapointing is the lack of tangible outrage on our part.

Maybe their lawyers were getting board.
It just seems to be a culture of how far can we push the boundries and then run off sulking when little Timmy happens to download a free MP3 that he probbly couldn't afford to buy annyway.
So What.
What are YOU going to do about it.

Agreed. And the backing band does sound good - what I've heard of it.
Still, I feel it's the TV and AV industry, not so much the music industry, that we're talking about here. I say it misleads the public about our great and diverse music scene. Many will agree, the music industry it what goes on any night in venues around St Kilda, Fitzroy, Brunswick (add your own...). And appeal of these "artists" surely has more to do with the song writing - the goosebump factor - above anything else. Assume the voting is reflective of what people (think they) want to hear repeatedly on commercial radio, would you vote for:
a) the best singer in the world singing an ok song, or
b) a singer with more soul than anything, singing a fantastic song?
Less praise to singers & actors in general and more credit to writers! And more airplay to those who really deserve it.
- A born cynic.

It gets worse.
First some people looking at the code of this found some software licensed under the LGPL, it's not illegal to do this as long as they provide the source code and identify that it's there, but today they've found not just software under the stronger GPL which requires all of the source code to be released, but that this code was written by the guy who cracked the copy protection on DVD's (and was sued for it at the behest of the MPAA of which SONY is a member).
Feel sorry for people working on idol? Why? It's a cash cow. I'd be in it if I could.
I'll proudly say I've worked with one idol artist on post idol releases and am still in talks to work with another. Neither were the winners but they both have fine voices. And I challenge any knockers out there to get a call from Sony asking them to do a track - and say "no, sorry, I don't work in music to make a living, I'm just in it for art's sake." Australia is nowhere near a big enough marketplace for producers to sit back and pick and choose. Unless your day job is something else like real estate.
Cheers,
AE

The cash cow can be milked way after the use by date. Dave was out here recently as i'm sure you all know, earning a crust taking the mickey out of himself!
Perhaps, like cartons of milk, sony etc should have by now marked all cd's, dvd's, digital photos, etc with a best before date and invented a software that triggers a self destruct function within four weeks of the date passing, in the event that the consumer hasn't the common sence to dispose of said product themselvs.

There are already "downloaded files" that have expiration dates, and yes they do disappear after a set amount of time.

You are F@$%^@g kidding Me!
It doesn't get much lower than that!
I don't think that Lucusfilm(TM) would be low enough to even consider thinking about suing someone just because they sent a picture of their kid in a Yoda costume.
These people should be lined up and shot! (not figuretivley speaking either)
