I've just heard back from the first guy to take these for a spin around the block. He's had them for a week or so and used them on a couple of different projects. His words : "friggin unbelieveable EQ, just fantastic, I want them!" And so now there are three pairs.

maybe I should auction them at some crazy hour of the day?

Here's a 1272 that I was lucky enough to not have to bid for at the crack of dawn from our beloved overlord. But thought i'd share to give you a diy idea for a quick fix as opposed to the Proharmonic champagne treatment. It is rockin even without the extra gain mod. The four switches are a jlm go-between board and the top switch is a Mic/DI switch. I am picky with my DI's and this thing is very cool! Now just need to put some laser etching for the labels.

big red marconi knobs are really hard to get and cost $50 -75 when they show up
the only source one at a time is brent averil when he is in the mood or phonix audio (both usa )when he has them .

what i can happily do is give you the metal neve knobs that came with that series neve , which is more suited anyway
they are at robs as well , but he might have to colour the top red on the gain one .

same deal for you dale :)

also at robs are the prize mini sifam square vu meters (think ssl comp 1 unit size ) that i was going to use to rack these up myself.
they are very thin on the ground so if you want them they are $100 each

i may still have some bigger sifams at robs but maybe not... ask him $60 each .

hey barney what time of day did i auction that 1272 ..?
i cannot believe i didnt get some thrill out of it !

regular little cottage industry rack thing going on there rob:)

i made andy stewart buy one of those mci 500 consoles about ten years ago , it was a fabulous sounding thing , and quite simple and well built inside - way better then the over done newer ones .
he sold it in melbourne when he moved to sydney for a few years

pity the damn things are white :)

A couple of other possibles for Neveesque knobs are Geoff Tanner at Aurora or possible Dan Alexander (if you are prepared for the strange conversations involved.)

rick, rob, id like to take up the offer on the small vu's and knobs... why do we bloody lust over red knobs... of the gain style...

while im at it, rick what else were you going to do with these.. it sounds like the email i sent to rob and yourself is for pretty much the same build as you were going to do.
rack, vu, phase, pad, 48V, in/out pots, red knobs (now metal, correct series..) di and robs "air" switch....recap? any other house keeping..

anyone else want to make suggestions... ill keep you all posted on the build. this is after all a turtle rock project...

Rick what desk got harvested for these line amps?
Cheers for the Neve metal knobs - great bonus.
Being a bit of a novice - why do I want VU meters on the neve if I am trying to dial in a sound?
And how much extra work is required to put in a VU meter? (an expense I am willing to pay for if justifiable)

I guess I can make this posting here.
I spoke/emailed recently with Geoff Tanner and he gave me some response to look out for when racking them up.

"If you don't terminate the output of any amp fitted with the tertiary wound transformer, the lift is nearer 10dB at around 35 to 40KHz. You can hear the effect of this on lower order frequencies. It makes the sound very sibilant.

Precisely the same effect was caused on an earlier console that Geoff Emerick noticed and was a poor soldered transformer termination.

If terminated correctly, the modules sound fine.

If not terminated correctly, they sound horrid.

Period.

Now once again I am a novice who has no experience with vintage gear so I am at the mercy of more experienced racker-uppers.
Please feel free to comment on this so I can learn more about the gear.

Come to think of it I remember reading this in an interview once, and not many other people if any could hear the problem that Geoff had and I think Rupert was the one that fixed it for him. So is this really a big problem at all??
