Mystery AMS Neve gear

Postby Kurt » Thu Jan 28, 2010 11:25 pm

A local auction house has a bunch of AMS Neve stuff at the moment. I have no idea what it does but I assume it's broadcast gear, probably ABC?

I have a "Studio Sound" mag from '93 in the back of my car with that Logic controller on the front. Looks pretty cool, obviously way outdated now though.

Like I said, I have no idea what these things are, let alone what they do. I thought maybe the console doo-dads may have some bits that someone who's good at stuff might be able to re-use, pres, summing busses, who knows?

These are very old hard disk recording/editing system components. 16 bit I suspect. You don't want to go there. Any PC/Mac recording system would do it all better/cheaper. There's a lot more AMS than Neve in those pictures.

The spectra desk is 24 bit and probably
24 chn as well eq & comp and sound excellent for a digital desk

I could almost convince myself to grab it and stick it under the house

the audiofile is probably 16 chn and 16 bit

your looking at about 400,000 with of junk
around 1997-8 vintage

it would still sound amazing but GarageBand is way more powerful
this is when ams/ neve were streets ahead of everybody else

Warning : you don't want this stuff

and so it goes

Hi there,

I have a similar but older system in my shed...worked great until a rat pissed on it (in the studio !)

The jog /shuttle wheel is to die for !

Other than Rick, a guy called Ant (who i think is on this list) is Mr Neve Audiofile in Australia.
He knows everything about these systems.

Mainly used for placing dialogue over music beds etc..for broadcast TV applications.
Mine had no waveforms, just green blobs where the audio was with auto fade in/out etc.
Sounded very good though and it was 16 bit.
(Was VERY expensive in the 80's)

Cheers

yeah i sold a bunch of my stuffAMS /NEVE to ANT years ago
i dunno maybe the console is up somebodies alley but not mine
you have to make sure you have all the right bits which probably means buying everything
which is a bunch of heavy outdated stuff etc etc

Yep, I bought a bunch of gear off him for parts (a few times actually).

It's an Audiofile system. Probably been de-commissioned from some broadcast facility. Channel 9 in Perth had one for years to do all audio post/conforming for their in house TVC's and Longform shows. For TV work it was very good. It's not really built for music production. Hugely expensive in it's day but very, very high quality.
