These look like very useful bits of gear - what's the advantage of emphasis?

WARNING - VERY BASIC EXPLANATION - Pre-emphasis/emphasis is a bit like eqing to allow for noise caused by things like conversion, transmission over airwaves etc. Say the transmission adds noise that is in the top end...so to compensate the top end is wound down on the receiver (emphasis). Giets rid of the noise, but also the top end of the program. Soo, pre-emphasis...we crank up the top end on the program so when it's wound down at the receiver the top end of the prgram is normal.
Dolby noise reduction has a similar kinda principle.
As I say, this is a real basic explanation. Broadcast nerds please don't shoot....

Broadcast nerd here .. Andy you got it pretty much spot on with regards to how pre-emphasis and de-emphasis works. It's a part of the standard for FM broadcast around the world.

The 722 was designed to be used in a FM broadcast chain (not that anybody does these days) hence why it had a pre-emphasis option built in.
