Trimax type 1 amplifier (A63?) - looking for suggestions

Postby GlennS » Mon Jun 21, 2010 12:18 pm

Hi All,

Looking for suggestions for what to do with a single Trimax type 1 amplifier. It's a 40dB gain block, no power supply. I bought it from an old studio just off Oxford St years ago who were having a fire sale (literally). I had used them before (as single 40db mic pres) when hired from the now defunct studio gear hire mob in Sydney who's name escapes me right now. I loved the sound so I would really love to do something with this sometime, i.e. a simple mic pre. Anybody done anything similar with one of these?

Cheers,
Glenn

I did this to mine. Or you could sell it to me as I need another one to make another pair ;-)

Hi Barney. Thanks, but I'm not interested in selling it at this stage. I guess the hard part is that I don't have a power supply module. Is that something difficult to acheive? Years ago I took this thing to Dave Peach & he didn't seem interested & said it wouldn't be worth it, but I always remembered the sound.

Thanks Angus, good to know. Rob modified a black Urei LA4 for me a couple of years ago & I was impressed by the quality of his work, not to mention the improvement in sound. I would be happy with a DI input and variable attentuation, and possibly phantom power. I have a single Neumann phantom power box, but that is sometimes in use with the LA4 without a mic pre.

The units have a sound, but as always connecting the right source to the right mic/pre combo is up to the engineers taste or judgement. I'm still learning how they work on different gigs. Mine are still stock at mo, lacking in gain a little for some sources. But when they work i'm more than happy. And it's nice to have a little Aussie heritage in the studio.

How much should one expect to pay for these old TRIMAX pre's fellas?
Sounds like a (potentially) nice unit, with some mod's / tweaks to provide some front panel controls.

Did they make any units with mic gain adjustment as standard?

Cheers,
