strip silence? its what I use in protools for anything I would usually gate and you can also use it to strip sounds and leave silence or whatever is under the threshold you set.

I have found that Pro Tools' gate, when used with a side chain filter can achieve outstanding results.

I quite like the gate in the Sony Oxford Dynamics plug, but more often than not I will just use Logic's Strip Silence function - set parameters, preview the edited waveform/adjust to taste, hit edit, select all regions and apply a short global fade in/out for each edit in one hit. Done.

I like the gate in the UAD Neve 88RS. Apparently (though I have no experience with it) the gate in Softube's Valley People Dynamite plug is good too.

Try sonalksis.com 14 day trial.
I use their comps & Eq.

I can second the Sonalksis gate, lots of versatility there.

If you're on the cheap, Floorfish works well and easy to use, though it is just an expander/gate, so no range settings and no external side chain.

Angus, sonitus got swallowed up by the roland/cakewalk fish. Available in some versions of SONAR or purchase VST/DIRECTX from
http://www.cakewalk.com/Products/Sonitus/sonitus.asp - apparently you can buy individuals - PC only though.
