wild spaces near melbourne
I'm looking for wild and large acoustic spaces in and around melbourne and victoria to track 20-30 strings. To put it in perspectiveI've used churches, town halls etc even the castlemaine gaol and I'm looking for more of the same. Dont care how wild and crazy though outside sound is a serious consideration. places such as old melbourne gaol, ballroom above flinders st train station, private school concert halls etc. Any tips greatly appreciated...

I know a guy in Castlemaine who lives in an old church, the front brick part is his studio with grand piano.

Thanks Chris, dont think I'll be getting the session to go to tassie though I have recorded in the caves which are also awesome. Barney, how big is the church and would it be interesting or simply being in somebody's house?

It's set up as a teaching/recording thing. I've tracked there, it has a vibe. I'll call the guy and see if he's interested.

Hey Myles
Any huge underground car parks? - these can be great sounding at night when all the cars have gone, you can put various mics on different levels for spooky reverbs too.
There must also be some great tunnel systems in or around Melb - underneath court houses, big old Gov/police buildings with cold war bomb shelters, asio current or past torture chambers, Town halls, old disused train tunnels & mines.....
Also may be good to suss out the water board and see if there is any old underground water storage caverns.
Luck to ya!

Hi Myles,
Not sure how far you want to travel, but there's a really nice woodland area at the base of the Hume Weir - the acoustics are quite "heavy" feeling though that could be the ominous weight of water leaning over you.... perhaps there are some other dams nearer to you?

There is a church in northecote which has amazing acoustics on high street. Many recording have been done there.
Also I've recorded in a church in tyldon about an hour from melbourne which was good. the people that run it are wonderful and if you slip em a couple of bucks for the upkeep they're pretty happy.
