you can with a unitor or simialr unit
needs to be able to read/write SMPTE and output MTC
strip the tape with SMPTE code
send the striped tape channel to the smpte audio in of the unitor 8
set the 002 to slave to MTC
set your offsets
and your done

i've run smpte out of my midiman 8x8/s (incorporates smpte read/write).
as mark says -
stripe the tape (smpte out from midi device, onto tape track),
run smpte striped tape back to smpte input on midi device
set protools to read smpte from the midiman smpte input
set protools to play on external sync (the button to the left of 'play' in the transport window'!!!!!)
determine the offset
hit play on your tape
protools should now lock up and you're away.
fast fwd or rewind to a point on the tape, and i have found that protools syncs straight away to the new time point very nicely.

Thanks for that guys.
Truth be told I was actually expecting to be told that this was only a HD thing. Can't wait to try it out !
