I see you are selling your Waves Mercury... are you not going to use Waves any longer or do you have another package?
Following on from that, have you heard anything about the Waves AAX versions? I've googled around a bit but couldn't find anything concrete.
Welp... Let's just say that I was selling the bundle.. I had some offers and started getting close, but then Waves dropped their 70% Black Friday sale announcement this morning.. It looks as if I'll be hanging on to it a bit longer..
The reason for selling is pretty simple really.. Of the 88 gazillion plugs you get with it.. I use maybe four all the time. There are others that I use occasionally and they're certainly handy to have.. but for the basics, I have my favorites.. Q10, C1, L2 are frequent guests.. I like the Puig comps and EQ's.. and the Classics bundle is great.
I guess I want to change how I'm doing things too.. I've begun really working on the sound I put down and I'm finding that the more time I spend there, the more I save everywhere else.. and the less I have to 'manipulate' the audio.. I'm sort of doing the same thing with gear too.. using less mics on drums etc...
I'm a self-taught guy with a home project studio. I've done alright and now that I'm moving and will have a larger and nicer space, I want to put money into the room (and more analog gear).
I guess I'm becoming a bit of a 'minimalist' in my approach.. Don't get me wrong though.. I like seeing 800 mics around my kit..
Also, there is the whole 'move' thing.. I seem to be trimming a lot of fat from everywhere.. Maybe next year I'll be scouring the for sales sections again.. but I've got a fair-few more JLM pre's and comps I want to build.. and a few other things as well.
Building is good therapy.
As far as AAX goes.. All that I am hearing is that AAX will be different in the coding from RTAS, but not any more efficient.. at least for awhile.. so there's no real gain there. For TDM plugs it's different. They have the advantage of being programmed a bit differently and have more room for advancement. Also, they work MUCH better between themselves and RTAS so they should not have the impact on the HDX chips that TDM/RTAS did.
Dave Tremblay is a programmer for Avid and has been coming into a thread over there going through a lot of the transitional stuff, and a bit about the 'under the hood' workings of AAX.
As it stands, I have a HD Native card and their 8x8x8 I/O using a 2008 2.1 Mac Pro.. I tried a test session recording 16 tracks at 96/32bit using the new channel strip on every channel with everything turned on. On this old MP it still only hit about 33% CPU usage which is brilliant... Adding Slates VCC to everything (channel only with no oversampling), took it to the mid 40's.. still beautiful for recording..
As the sessions load up I can see where this old mac might begin to bog, but for now it's smoking right along.. I think the AAX thing will work itself out over time but the real advantage will be when it finally hits 64 bit and can access more RAM. Doubt it will ever get more efficient though. at least not for the next year or so.
Going back to the Merc bundle, the great thing is that I should get all of the AAX upgrades for free... That will add a ton of AAX ability for no money.. so a good deal. Most plug developers are going to go the 'free' route, but I'm confident that they will recoup their costs somehow down the road. We pay, we always pay.
All of this, of course, is just my opinion and I could be wrong.. wouldn't be the first time.
Peace!
