Postby NYMo » Fri Oct 27, 2006 9:19 am

Hi there,

I've just picked up a Sony 3348 and need to get bits of info about it.

You will need quite a bit of info, actually. Where did you buy this and what condition are the heads in? In answering this, don't rely on what the seller told you.

What do you want to do with the machine?

while we are at it there where only ever a few machines in australia, i have experience with two particular machines, one originally from apocalypse and then sold on by me to inxs- last i saw it was in safe hands in a reputable studio in the gosford area the other one was originally from perth ending up here in this building and was err... well .. " stolen ! " it disapeared off the map , i hope you bought the gosford one for more reasons then the rap sheet

Hi there,

Don't mean to open a can of worms...I bought this off the Bay which originally came through RACS (who are fairly reputable i think)??

It was an ex lease deal one.

The heads have done 1810 hours. (so i presume they are half reasonable)

The bits of info I am referring to are * technical bits * of info.

Like (and don't forget I don't know much!)

How can I swap the Edacs on it which are the wrong size for my Soundcraft TS 12 etc

Where can I get an owners manual from ??
I am buying some tape from the US at the moment.

Recently I have been going thru a *I hate all computers phase* and thought I might like to record one pass songs directly to tape and since I can't afford an MCI..this looked like a bit of fun. (Lifting it wasn't !)

I am looking at using it to record bands (no overdubs.. haha)

"the advance head has a chip in it" sounds like the phrase that that will get you unstuck mr nymo"

Once I work out what the advance head is , I'll let you know (You may like to tell me which one !)

Hopefully this is one of the machines that you've never head of..i you want to throw me the serial number of the stolen one, please do.

I have a checkered past....but stealing gear isn't one of them !

Cheers

I have some albums that were tracked on a Mitsubish X16 (is that right?) and they sound great.

I was thinking.... It would be a little bulky, but if these machines sound so good, would it be feasible to run them in EE mode and then through to your DAW, effectively just using it as converters?

Hi kris,

One of my many questions...what is EE mode ?

Mark,

Swap you the 3348 for your Sony APR 24 !

Sorry.

EE mode is Electronic to Electronic. On a video machine it means you are monitoring the signal from the input to the output without going via the heads of the machine. As opposed to confidence playback where the signal you see/hear is being read from the replay heads as it's being recorded.

So in the case of the 3348, I'm wondering if you just put it into record ready but didn't actually record to tape, the signal would be getting converted to digital and going to the outputs of the machine. This way, as Mark has indicated, you would get your great digital sound and route it into your DAW.

ex lease...?
my feeling is you will have the problem one on you hands
there were only 4 in aust and i can mentally account account for two of them so
if there is still one at "the grove" then you have the one with a checkered past.
if you got it with no manuals no cables then its a sure bet it has a shady history.

the manuals could be bought from sony you will need an operations manual at least (i promise)
the pity is i had the cable loom for that 48trk machine ( it was left in the floor ) but i have long since used and reused the plugs.
i hope you did not pay a lot !

btw they are a great machine - incredable technology great sound fun to drive and reliable once you get up to speed with it etc etc

Hi Rick,

It came with edac looms...but they are too wide for my TS 12.

If anyone wants to swap those edacs for the thinner edacs ..please let me know.

Is this a Milkbar thing you are referring to in your other post ??
