The great sell off of 2012...with even more.

Postby mylesgm » Fri Mar 09, 2012 10:30 am

My wife and I are heading overseas for 12-18 months on one of those once in a lifetime experiences. We're off to work in a developing country (my wife does mental health social work) and who knows what the future holds. So I'm selling off a large part of my studio and associated equipment and here's the first part of the list. All of the equipment is working and in good order, lots has been customised or purpose built and there are quite a few vintage pieces. I'll be putting up photos as I take them but go ahead, ask questions and make reasonable offers. I will put this stuff on ebay/gearsultz etc in a week or so but I thought I'd give you guys first shot and I am open to certain trades or other negotiations but no sexual favours.

oh and for those interested, I'm not getting out of the business. I'm keeping some key items, most of my mics and moving to a streamlined portable setup and will do mix and recording work wherever we end up...

Protools HD 9 and 10 licenses
2x PCIe HD Accel cards
1x Aurora Lynx 16 with LT-HD card for interfacing with the HD cards
1x 2007 Mac Pro Quad intel, 22" LCD screen, keyboard. This has a fanless graphics card which makes the computer very quiet. Rock solid set up, well as rock solid as any system can be. Can't sell this immediately as I'm still using it till around mid-June. Not sure how much this is worth as a package but 4-5k for the PT, 2500-3k for the lynx and LTHD card and 500-750 for the computer and I'd like to sell as a package. SOLD

Studio Desk made from solid tas oak table with 10ru rack space on either side of the central workspace. All done by a friend of mine to my design, it looks great and feels good to sit at too. Can't sell till mid July.

UAD quad card. I wont be selling my licenses for plugins so this will come with only the standard plugs but they regularly run sales and plugins are cheap. Will be available after July 12.

I also have a valley people 610 stereo VCA compressor/expander. good condition, the faceplate has a few marks and the rest of the case is showing some wear but stills sounds great. $550 SOLD

2channel Tapco 4400 Spring Reverb. In excellent physical and electrical condition, it almost looks new! two channels of spring reverbs with individual graphic eq, i/o gains and dry/wet control. Sounds great but not quite as nice as my BX15. $300 SOLD

1x Astor vintage inductor based eq module. fixed hi and lo bands with a boost only presence filter. got three of these from Rick and two are racked up and sounding very sweet. I didn't use this one because it has a nice faceplate and the other two I made new faceplates for. transformer i/o and fully discrete, I was going to slip this into a rack with a 312 preamp for a channel strip. $400

1x Trident s800 eq clone. Got this from PeterC who did the clone design. This was this was the prototype and it works perfectly. Was going to rack this with a 312 pre amp too but didn't get around to it. $100 SOLD

Can attest to the quality of the JBL 7510b. I've got one with 16 channels. It's not without problems (got to get it fixed), but the mic pres are pretty fat. Works a treat on drums.

Myles, can you confirm that you have the Phoenix input connectors (I'd be surprised if you didn't).

Re the JBL 7510 input connectors:

There was a chap on ebay selling 3-pin Phoenix connectors... think he's still around. That's where I got mine. The original connector was a 12-pin (4 channels per card). Using 4 3-pin connectors makes a much tighter fit.

Anyway, they're not made of unobtainium.

yeah there are some photos on gearslutz from when I had it made but its about 2mtrs wide maybe slightly more and 1.2ish deep. It was originally a family dining table if that gives you an idea about height. The legs come off for transport but it is a heavy two person carry. I always get comments on it and I'll probably just make something similar when I get back...

Sounds like a great adventure Myles, is your wife doing an avi or similar?

My wife works in international / womens health and we did a similar thing a while back (with my work first off), it was a wonderful life altering experience.

Best of luck.

My wife is doing an AYAD which I think is run by the same organisation as the AVI. Where did you go and what did you do? I've no idea what I'm going to get up to...

Thanks Richard but there is still more to come! Not sure that I'll sell the 2254c, I like it too much. There are a number of other pieces that wont be going anywhere either but you can always make an offer and tempt me...

I did an ayad in lao, doing business development with a local record label.

Then we were in central Vietnam and Hanoi for my wife's work while I contracted for a client in Singapore .

Where are you headed?

Well its like it'll be either Hanoi or the Philippines. I was in Lao last year, what a beautiful country and people! What sort of work did you do for the record label? I'd love to find some kind of production work over there. We also stopped in Hanoi last year which was exciting but very busy, not sure how I'll go in such a large and bustling city.
Any idea of work possibilities?

Hey Myles, I was in Hanoi and most of Vietnam last year. Pretty limited studio wise up north, there is the odd place set up in houses etc. Bit more action down south in HCM, but if you find Hanoi busy then Saigon will do your head in. At least the internet is good.
I actually really liked Hanoi. Love Vietnam.
My missus' company has offices in Hanoi and Saigon. We are anglin to move over there for a while in the next couple of years if we can swing it. We could just about live off the rent from our place here.
Have you been to Phu Quoc of the south coast? Now that's somehwere I want to retire..
Good luck it sounds awesome. I'm jealous.

yeah we went to Ho Chi Minh and it was nuts... the taxi ride from our hotel to the airport was a little over an hour, we went a little over 6km at roughly 4-5k an hour. The guy never got the car out of second gear the traffic was just so intense. Didn't make it any further south though but I did enjoy the country. Weird too because I have close family friends that fought in the vietnam war and we visited the war museum in HCM which was also intense...

I was in Phu Quoc in January- really lucky with the weather and it was incredible. Loved it.
I also love HCMC- I don't really like busy cities but something about that place just does it for me. Not a fan of Hanoi for some reason.

One of the good things I remember about hanoi was the fresh beer (bia hoi) that they were serving on the streets... tasty, cold, cheap, microbrewed beer that was just fantastic. And another thing was their incredible agility and control of motorbikes. I ride a bike everywhere but their skill was incredible. I was staying in a mountain village and hired a bike to tool around the countryside (tegan on the back) and we went down the mountainside to a few close villages. on the way down I'm having real trouble keeping this tiny bike upright on rough roads with creeks running across them, sometimes the road was the creek bed. But then we come around a corner and there is this dude riding a 125cc motorbike with a kitchen sized FRIDGE strapped across the back! not only was it a fridge but we passed him going back up and he had stopped at the side of the road to drink a beer out of his FULL FRIDGE he was taking up to sell in the village we were staying! Incredible...
