New Audient 4816 Coming My Way

Postby SteveL » Tue May 22, 2012 11:53 pm

Well, I bit the bullet today on one of the new Audient ASP 4816 small format analog consoles:

A very well thought out in-line desk with some really flexible routings/16 buses/stereo bus comp etc. It will work its first session in the next couple of weeks.... I have a great cabinet-maker who will craft a very nice piece of furniture around the desk for me. Pics when he's done!

They make pretty allright pres, been looking at their ASP whatever adat thingy 8 channel pre for a mate who's setting up a mobile truck. Nice stuff. I sorta looked at their Sumo at one point cause it had the DAW control layer as well. 16 busses will be nice..

Congrats Steve,
Would you care to tell a bit about your setup and how you're going to integrate the Audient into it.
I find it interesting, but I want somehting with analog fader automation..

Hi Senad,

You know, I looked at the fader automation desks, but I have a Mackie MCU on the side here, and really for the amount of automation I do, I find that will be enough to keep at hand. I'm rarely recording bands, it's more singer-songwriter stuff (and lately Bush Poets would you believe). The automation side of things would have cost a lot more, though there was the A&H GSR24M hybrid...... I'm really more of a vanity-studio than a commercial operator, though I do get paying clients coming up here now since the local paper ran a front page story on my recording at Abbey Road with the London Symphony Orchestra last year). Fortunately, I can afford to indulge my taste in nice equipment, and the Audient amongst other things is a nice piece of eye-candy for those that do come in and pay me for my time!

I've composed and written in Logic for years, more recently PTools, and the Audient will interface via a Lynx Aurora 16 ADDA, PCIe card to octo Mac Pro, 24 gig. Really, I just plan to track through the Audient, do whatever automation etc is needed in Logic/PT via the MCU, plugs where needed etc, and back out to the Audient for mixing/summing with hardware comps/verbs etc. It will be so nice to work on a desk again....

I'll shortly embark on the build of a dedicated control room/live room on the property here - I'll post here as things progress with pics. In honour of the sub-arctic climate here, Wuthering Heights atmosphere, winter ice and snow, the joint will be named "Freezing Hill Studios". We're at 3000-feet here....

Thanks for the reply Steve...great stuff.
Yeah I looked at GSR 24m or whatever the A&H desk is called with auto, but was a bit nervous about the initial reports on the desk. My main thing with automating levels ITB and then compressing with outboard is hitting the comps at different levels with tracks that are automated ITB.
But you're right, a decent quality mixer with motors costs a bit.
Good luck, hope it works great for you..Do report when you get it going.
Cheers

Will do Senad. It's time to discover the joys of manually riding some faders again! Fortunately I have big long fingers....

Haha..if you do, and if there are not many channels to ride, you'll be fine :)
