New Apogee Mobile - Seriously Cool

Postby smash » Thu Jan 25, 2007 10:23 pm

Anyone else see the new Apogee Symphony Digital?

If it actually does what they are saying 32 ch @ 24/96 with 1.6 ms latency ON A LAPTOP then I will be delaying the Mac Pro, to buy a 15" !!!

Link please ?

Oh all right I'll google it... I'm still on freakin dialup here

This sounds like exactly what I'm looking for right now, but I bet it will be pricey (the finger thing means the taxes).

Oh man, lol - I say this all the time and no-one gets me.

...purple monkey dishwasher (I was in a band once that was called purple monkey trance, in homage to this line)

Anyways, enough Simpsons - I'll stop cluttering up this thread. The symphony does look nice, though...

It uses an Express Card interface...

Express Card is basically the mobile version of PCIe, so essentially you are meant to get the same (computer) bandwidth as if you had a proper desktop.

So theoretically it could be for Mac and PC, but at the moment it seems to be Mac only, and it needs to be a MB Pro at that.

Releastically,

The unit will not make me a better engineer,

The unit will not make the songs that I record any better,

The unit will not wake up before me in the morning and make me breakfast

That said, if, like I have, you have been increasingly frustrated by the huge latency of laptop recording systems, to the point where they impinge creativity because you need to time allign audio after exery take....

.... than this could be pretty cool.

Price wise - not cheap, the 2 ch version for mobile is 200 US$ cheaper than the desktop version.

Mobile 2x2 = US$2790
Mobile 8x8 = US$3790

I guess it all depends on what you are comparing the system too, the 2x2 compares horribly to an MBox, but will be waaayyy better sounding with a heaps lower latency

a 16x16 or 32x32 version, will be cheaper than a HD rig, with the same latency, and better sounding.

Most of the benefits seem to be dependant upon whether or not people are prepared to say goodbye to 'tools.

I've been looking into the Symphony for a while and am hoping it will come out for pc. Apogee are claiming 1.6 ms with plugins running, hmmmmm. Anyway I've been using an RME hdsp card and the latency is very low but I have to turn plugins off for near zero latency. I'm really keen to get Symphony and the Maestro routing software but..... I don't think it will be coming out on PC at all, judging by Apogees response when asked. They say it works on Macpro and G5.

Other golden Simpson jokes that work in the studio

"thank you NASA!"

Homer finds the star-wipe video plugin. "Why eat hamburger when you've got steak?" Lisa mumbles "I'm getting my name taken off this thing"

Sorry not trying to hijack the thread but when you find someone who talks simpson things get a bit juvenile.

You don't make friends with salad.

Ok, why not.

The following is the funniest thing ever written in the simpsons.

Billy Corgan introducing himself to Homer....

Billy Corgan: "Billy Corgan, Smashing Pumpkins"
Homer: "Homer Simpson, smiling politely"
