AWA transformers

Hi all,

through a random series of events I have a board of 10 x AWA 2XC63386 transformers. But I have no idea what (if anything) they're useful for.

They're large and heavy-ish so that's a start.

How many cables are coming out of them? 4, 5, 6 or?
Of course you should get out some alligator clips and test them. Try line level signal from your DAW and feed the return back to the DAW and look at the difference in level. If they are big 9 times out of 10 they'll be line to line (600:600) transformers, maybe 600:1200 (1:2) and maybe 600:2400 (1:4). If you have a signal generator and an analyser in your DAW send some white noise into the tx and then look at the resulting output on the frequency analyser to get a rough idea of frequency response. Try different combinations of the transformer connections to see how the response changes to sort out whether you've hooked it up correctly.

6 wires coming out the bottom.

I'm pretty sure they're 1:1 – I know I'm being lazy...

They appear to have been used in an ABC intercom system.

Thinking they might be useful as output transformers for some pres I need to rack?

depends on the preamp, what is driving the transformer, what is the transformer rating and what the transformer is connected to.
If the transformers where used in an intercom you might find that their rating might still be 1:1 but maybe 10k:10k or something similar. Where was the intercom and do you know what was plugged into it?
I'm sure more knowledgeable people than I will come along and provide more meaningful info but a simple test of course is to plug it in to what you want to use. You can't really damage the tx easily so don't worry about that. If you have an unbalanced output you'll need to play with the wires to see which connection gives you balanced out but it shouldn't too hard. What is the colour of the wires?

Blue, Green, Black, Red, Yellow, White.

No idea where / what was plugged into it – just says intercom on the side of the card.

OK, I think I really do need to break out alligator clips and play with them.

ok, so they are mounted on a pcb right? so that should give you and idea as to which set of wires goes together. Post a pic of the board. My guess is that white is one 0 and black is the other 0. Then the other wires should go in pairs. See where that gets you.

Just filling in the blanks here for anyone that comes across these, they are 600ohm 1:1 transformers. Still haven't figured out what to do with them.
