Auditronics help

This s a long shot but I'll try my luck.

As many know, I own Steve Francis's old Auditronics 701 console (36 channel frame). I've got 34 channel strips, with 32 installed and two for parts/spares.

This guy in NZ is selling off a stripped 532 console.

Is any of this stuff useful to me? I'd love to fill out the 36 channel frame, plus have a few spares. I'd consult all of those detailed Auditronics info websites... but there aren't any

I did a google search and saw this photo of a 532. Is this the one being stripped?
It sure looks exactly the same as my old 740.

Those modules could drop straight in.
How many is he selling?

Yep, that's the one. He's got loads of photos of all the parts too. I'll see what I can do about copying them.

Apparently it used to belong to SAE in Brisbane, and allegedly was owned by Jimmy Barnes at one point. Here's the blurb from when the current seller bought it last year (his wife is making him sell it).

See if he can send you what number is on the bottom of the main eq module....I'm guessing it says 701.
Or a pic of the guts of the module with the pins showing.
It should be the same as yours.
I may have to buy some myself.

Yep, that's the one, it still has the RTW meters sitting beneath the centre meters. I always wondered where that console finished up - Answer: Everywhere.

Thanks for uploading the photos Manning.

So although very similar to the 700 series it has some differences.
4 band parametric EQ with adjustable HPF and LPF, more aux sends
Faders are exactly the same as yours.
It looks like the buss modules are the same as well.

The pins on back of the main module are in a different place so I doubt they will drop straight in.

There could be some good spares to be had though
eg....A couple of lines from his patch bay should drop into your free spaces.

That is definitely Jimmy's old console, I recognise the mods on the channel strips. I installed it into his studio, Otto did a lot of work on it.

I just bought some Output Assign modules (to use parts as output stages for a 110B pre rack project thing-a-me-bob) and it would be cool to know if the history discussed here relates to these modules (just for fun).

Hi Evan,

I just posted on the "for sale" Auditronics thread but now I see your post here I can offer a better option.
I'm pretty sure from the photos I saw of the New Zealand 532 console that the ouput assign module is the same as on the 701 desk.
Manning has that model console and all the schematics.
He should be able to give you what you need.

Update - after a fair bit of scanning at my end and a hefty bit of Photoshop wizardry at Evan's end, we've managed to cobble together a large JPG image of the schematic for the output assign module.

Can't imagine anyone has any immediate use for it, but one day someone will google the term "auditronics console schematics" and this thread will turn up.

If anyone can confirm whether or not the Output Assign modules are identical between 532 and 703 versions (or at least very similar) that would be helpful, too. I'm currently just assuming (as I'm still waiting on my 532 modules to arrive from NZ) that the 703 schematic is gonna at least be quite a good reference.

I got the impression these two different series desks were actually produced concurrently? Or did the 700 range pick up where the 532 left off?

I get confused with the model designations, because there are the three digit model number names, but also the "Grandson" & "Son of Grandson", and "Son of 36 Grand" type designations.

I gather the 501 series model (or "Son of 36 Grand"?) was sort of concurrent with the 110 (or "Grandson") consoles?

And then the 532 series (1980's?) moves away from the inductor EQ of the earlier models, and I suspect the 701 was based on the same technologies and ran concurrently?

Hi blokes.

I'm hoping to find some old Auditronics fader modules for my little sidecar project.
Anyone got some, or can recommend people to talk to?

I have occasionally seen the fader modules they did with the Penny & Giles fader pots on eBay auctions - and those would be the ideal ones to get, I guess - but much more common seems to be the other various type pots from Duncan etc. Any would be OK really, as I could upgrade the pots themselves at some point if they weren't gonna cut the mustard, or just worn out.

I was in touch with one guy "Honduran" last week who was selling a bunch of the Auditronics fader modules on eBay, but unfortunately he wasn't prepared to ship them to Australia! Bugger, as they sold fairly cheaply - about $10 each, with those funky old typewriter looking knobs, too. Actually three of the master / stereo faders went in one lot for only 0.99c! Not easy to watch from the sidelines..

Anyways, please put me in the loop if you know of some appropriate faders to work with.
I'm after between 10 and 16 channel (mono) faders, depending what's available, and a couple of the stereo / master faders.

5k log (audio) taper seems to be the way to go with these.

The appropriate P&G fader pot seems to be called 3220-C (mono) or 3222-C (stereo).
