1963 Optronics Desk, Valve Pres, etc - Offers Accepted

Postby cameron » Wed May 15, 2013 1:55 am

Update:
- Now including scans of original mixing consolette manual: https://www.dropbox.com/s/idf6vc8n4hnxhba/Optronics%201963%20Mixing%20Consolette%20Manual.pdf.
- Scans of rack setup: https://www.dropbox.com/s/qbt2e7r2lgmmies/Optronics%20Rack%20Setup.pdf.
- After much consideration, we have opted to let go of this vintage Optronics recording rig that was custom built by Graham Thirkell 50 years ago in 1963. Please PM me by August 31st 2013 if you are interested in taking ownership.

Image

This custom 'studio' built by Graham Thirkell includes:
  1. 1 x Optronics 8-channel 'Mixing Consolette' with knobs, built in 1963.

Scan of original manual is here (included and signed by Graham Thirkell): https://www.dropbox.com/s/idf6vc8n4hnxhba/Optronics%201963%20Mixing%20Consolette%20Manual.pdf

    From the manual:
The eight channel mixing consolette is a fully transistorized mains operated studio mixer.
All input channels, output channels, and the power supply are constructed on plug in cards for speed and ease of maintenance.
The eight input channels consist of six microphone inputs and two high level inputs.
The four output channels consist of an A and a B line output, Echo line output and Monitor line output.
All eight input channels carry A/B Selector switches on their outputs; thus allowing any inputs to be switched to the A or B output line amplifiers via master gain controls, so providing simplicity in stereo splitting.
The A and B outputs provide the stereo upper and lower track inputs for recording. CA output - upper track and left hand of stereo system; B output - lower track and right hand of stereo system; as per international studio standards.).
Two standard 311 V.U. meters are normally connected across the A and B outputs via two metering switches. These switches also allow the Echo or Monitor line outputs to be metered.

  2. 1 x free standing steel rack (custom built) including the following:
  3. 2 x mono Optronics valve preamps, possibly early version of Rola 77’s (in top of rack).
  4. 1 x power amp built by Graham (unlabelled, under the preamps)
  5. 1 x Optronics speaker switching unit
  6. 2 x patch bays (one in rack, other unmounted)
Scans of the setup diagrams for the rack equipment are here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/qbt2e7r2lgmmies/Optronics%20Rack%20Setup.pdf
  7. 1 x Ferrograph Series-4 reel-to-reel tape machine in case (built in UK) - complete with ‘Final Test OK’ tag dated 26 Jun 1962. This was custom modified by Graham Thirkell to run at 15ips (rather than 7.5). Please note the first photo shows a different Rola tape deck (in front of the rack) which is not being sold and was not part of original setup (we need to keep this to transfer some old recordings). The tape deck included in this setup is the original Ferrograph Series-4 which the desk was built to accommodate in the left cavity.
  8. 1 x Wooden desk built by Graham Thirkell to accommodate the Optronics 8-channel mixer and Ferrograph tape deck to the left.
  9. 1 x Optronics user manual and associated diagrams that were created for this equipment (links above). The user manual includes Graham's signature on the Guarantee page (which is now 49 years out of guarantee!).
  10. 2 x Speakers originally supplied by Graham. One is a tall standing wooden box / tower about 1.5m high and 40cm in width, the other a more traditional speaker box. Again, no photos of the speakers as these were sitting under piles of boxes, but they’re included if you want them.
  11. All the cables that link everything together.

If you are interested to take ownership of this rare 50 year old equipment, please PM me your interest by the end of August including these details:
  1. Please confirm if you intend to keep this equipment together as a unit?
  2. What do you plan to do with this equipment (e.g. display piece, restore to working order, etc)?
  3. Are you able to pick-up or arrange pick-up from south-east Melbourne? (most pieces are quite heavy and will require a few people for transport!)
  4. What price do you offer for the entire lot?

At the start of September I’ll let you know if you've 'won'.

As previously mentioned, this is first about ensuring this museum-grade equipment sees a good home and is cared for. Multiple offers have already been received into the thousands, but again, it's mostly about where this equipment will end up.

Please note that the last time this equipment was powered on was likely in the early 80’s, so I cannot guarantee it is still in working order. But importantly, this equipment has spent much of its 50 years untouched sitting in a closed, cold room in the dark.

Let me know if you have any questions. I can even speak with you on the phone if you send me your number, and I’ll be revising this post throughout August as needed to keep you informed.

Cheers

Cameron

Great find! Definitely worth keeping the desk intact and not parting out as the desk isn't modular and has more functionality as it is. Probably it won't have direct outs for each pre but they could be added.

At a cursory glance at the valve preamps look very similar to the Rola 77 layout. I'm sure they'd all sound fantastic.

You can get a service manual for the G36 from the Revox section of Studer's FTP site and if you need any parts I have pretty well anything you need to get it running.
Great looking desk by the way, classic .I reckon it would probably sound pretty good too.

I personally would love to see those desk & pres be restored and preserved - that's a historical find IMO.

That desk will be GOLD! (IMO)
the Rola pre's are above top notch. Comparable to only the best valve pre's - including telefunken (I prefer the Rola's)

Get a 8 track one inch - and you have a killer recording chain.

Great find!

there is not much to find out about on the web

but thirkell was the classic australian audio genius .. had his hand in everything.. and as time goes on he will undoubtably be remembered in ever increasing circles of hushed audio reverence .

like most audio genius types .. Neve included they started out building stuff for who ever they could ..built some businesses ...lost some businesses and did a bunch of reinventions of the wheel on the way .

the stuff you have .. because its australian , because its ancient and because it was custum built ...

is worth very little in $$$ terms :(

if it was the same designs and build quality and it was RCA, or western electric or klangfilm .. you would be sitting on the mother load ..
but your not ..

my advice would be power it up see what works see and what smokes
figure out if you can make it part of your world right now .. or even in your dreams
and use it ..
If you cannot forsee its use to you and its ok by whoever gave it to you .. sell it to somebody who can

I think the desk is a walkup sale at $1000 .. as soon as its $1500 its too much ..anything more is romantic fantasy money .. i would expect those "as is" prices to remain steady for lets say 5 years .. its never going to be much more
and depending on the state of it and who has it and wether they have the space for it .. it could easily be considered throw out junk ..

ok that said its going to need $1000 worth of service .. at least.. before its up to the standard that somebody could rely on to use professionally .. ( or even unprofessionally )

and if it was mine probably much more $$$ in mods so it was actually usable ..

so restored , modded .. perfect .. and in use its a $3-4 k mixer

On the right day in the sun , in the right wind the revox will net you a very very neat 4 figure $$$$ to a revox collector in japan or korea via ebay .. as is
on the rainy days you will only get $100 for it .

If you ever find a viable museum that will actually store or display your new found heavy old stuff you are in fact a clever clever man .. for some mysterious reason nobody but us lot is very interested in old heavy stuff that didn't do anything that killed people , started or ended a war or had its owners die in a plague or famine
or perhaps got lost on the way to somewhere they didn't know how to find ..

Its just the way it is ..

Fire the buggers up .. try not to kill yourself doing it and tell us whats what !

working well ..that desk is bound to sound beautiful .. !

Wow, great information from you all, and so quickly, many thanks. Special thanks to Rick for your valuable advice, greatly appreciated!!

Had a number of PMs, some asking for separate components, others wishing it all to stay as one and offering to take good care of it. I even got the lead of some people at AES writing a history on Graham Thurkell, so I've offered a visit to take photos, interview my relative who dealt directly with Graham, etc.

Whatever happens, I'll keep you guys informed... and feel free to add any additional information, offers or ideas...

cheers

Still my fave mic pre's...

Its great to keep this amazing tube gear going, apart from them sounding as good as the best stuff ever made....
I wish that Optro console a benevolent parent.
...and since this photo I tracked down a pair of original bezel on/off lights to complete the restoration.

Great score Cameron, make sure you let us know where it ends up. Wish I had relatives with that sorta old junk in their sheds!

Chris- where did you find spare original on/off lights? I'm tracking down a single light as well and can't find anything that looks the same, new or old. Also hunting for a spare VU meter but I think the chance of finding one is pretty slim.

Will definitely think about it and let you know Rick.
It's a strange world, I actually paid less than that for both of my Rolas! But I've been keeping my eyes open for 6 months and haven't seen any spare parts at all.

The meter you're after is a Master Instruments model S212 . These were supplied as an OEM part to Rola with a Rola logo on the face, but were a standard stock line meter as sold by Master Instruments and used by many radio stations and other audio facilities in the 60s and 70s. There is probably a Sifam one that would fit or something at mouser from Dixon instruments in their Vintage range. As you see in Chris's picture the top one has a non logo standard S212 meter.

Turtlerock brains trust wins again! Thanks Alastair, that's fantastic. It looks like Master Instruments still makes them, so I'll get in touch with them and see what I can source.

I'll have to check sizes, but looks like this one could be a fit too-

Perhaps you could speak with Campbell Bickerstaff at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney.
He deals with historically significant audio bits and bobs for the collection.
May at least be worth talking to.

This has reminded me of the channel strip pre,eq, limiter I have that needs finding, dusting off and fixing.
Precious little information about Optro gear, in particular due to Mr Thirkell refusing to discuss it with anyone.
Would love to know why.

Now, who can repair Optro I wonder...

Love the photos - imo it deserves to be restored and used

It has the same VUs and knobs as my AWA unit from the same era - not unexpected but perhaps that indicates it has some similar RCA/EMI/AWA components too? If it sounds anything like my AWA you have scored extremely well :ymapplause:

Cam responded to my PM, I'm not sure if he's going to post here or not, so here is the gist of what he said to me:

"Hi Manning,

Thanks for the prod!

... we've decided it's best to sell everything in one piece including the original tape machine that was built into the desk. I'm in the process of getting photos of the additional pieces together and will post on the forum soon. I'm more interested in keeping everything together and it going to a good home than a high price.

Cheers Cameron"
