A lot of my mates run studios.
We will pass work around to each other depending on what bands want or how booked we are.

Every week a new studio seems to open.. Another seems to close.
Although people wanting to get into the industry keeps going up.
Every band has a so-called engineer in it now a days.
Although it takes time and learning to become a real one.

I just found a lecture steve albini did at an audio school,
he talks about the industry and some records he has done... but the most suprising thing is he says he lists how many grammies, gold records and platnum and he lives on a salary of $24k a year, it goes about an hour but I found it very very interestying and I suggest using broadband if going to have a look

That 'romantic' mentor ideal you speak of does exist, I know this cause it happened to me.

Second, I got lucky in that the private school that I attended both had a decent studio and people who knew their stuff to teach me (and because they were in so rarely I started to maintain it and got a huge amount of experience that I wouldn't have otherwise been able to get. However as that was so disconnected from the commercial studio environment I've ended up in IT where I'll probably stay.

i reckon it's great to know that the mentor thing can happen.

may i ask, how old were you when you were taken on? not in a judging sense, believe me.

my theory is this.
if i miss out on being mentored myself, i can at least hope to be doing this long enough to learn enough to take on a mentee (?) myself.
and if i get my head down and do the best work i can do for each individual client (and keep a good relationship with as many other engineers as possible), then hopefully everything else will take care of itself.

but i know this. i ain't after paid book-learning. no sir-ee.


brings me to ask - is it time for us melbournians to meet for a beer again? has been a while since i missed out on the last round. . .

he had to use pierre because he tried (p) which is also my middle intial but i guess things got a little confusing.
what are the odds of that...?

if you check on the web he has a very impressive cv (real) , problem is that on most music sites where they do there own lists they seem to want to make his world just a bit better
if you look him up on google he has a nice big list of credits
problem is listed 95 % of them are actually mine, nothing to do with him, but thats the way the web data base works oh well ...

i hired mark despite the fact he was in his mid twentys , despite the fact he had an audio degree and dispite the fact i could not afford it.
(still cant !).
i hired him on a hunch without concerns for his audio skills ( which turned out to be excellent)
and it turns out his personality is well suited to this line of work.
i have got it wrong a couple of times with other guys who quit after 6 months when the reality of making records sets in.

we'll be officially launching the new studio in a few weeks, it will be invite only - mostly clients, producers, B-List celeberities etc.... but if any of you local guys are genuinely interested in coming along, then contact me off list and i'll see if i can squeeze another couple of slabs out of the catering budget ;-)

yes I have something to add..
Mark is currently living in Dubai and the young guy on the other thread that everybody is being so nice to emailed me the other day because he had applied to get on our forum three months ago and didn't know what happened to his application ..?

I told him its just that we have so many russian ladies trying to get on , unless you try really hard and follow the sign on details to the letter ( and /or follow up it up ) we probably think you don't care enough to get it .

I emailed Mark .. who still looks after the forum even though he has been running his own race for many years after working for me ... mark puts him in straight away .. within a day a bunch of forum members are offering job leads for the guy to follow up on .. and the rest .. include having the good sense to email me direct in the first place is up to him ..

So you are reading this and you want a fulltime career in audio ..?
be careful what you wish for is my advice ..

and keep on keepin' on in the meantime .
