5 Watt class-A epiphone guitar heads

at last. i kept holding off building an AX84 valve amp because the cost of parts was more than the rec.retail for the epiphone valve junior head.

and now they're here!

(or at least, deluxe guitars in south melbourne have some - $220!!!)

i'm picking mine up tonight.

and the coolest thing? do a google on mod kits - there's heaps out there for everything from output attenuation to "Brit Mod" switchable tone circuits. . .

anyway - i'm just hanging for that whistle to blow so's i can slide down the dino's tail and jog on home with my new booty.

ya'll have a great weekend - me and the missus are gonna spend most of it pretending to be a swamp-rock 2piece.

I read recently that Deluxe didn't have any stock - obviously that's not the case? Or was this a back order or something, mfdu?

Also, FWIW, a more recent batch of this amp has appeared under the Legacy brand - Billy Hydes has them.

Whilst on the topic, I'm really interested in the Fender Champion 600:



Which apparently isn't in Australia (yet).

go astro! i believe (from what i read on the world wide waste-of-time) that the legacy amps are built in the same factory as the epiphone amps. but do they do the head version?
funny the epiphones arrive at Deluxe at the same time the Legacy amps arrive at Billy's, huh?

aesthetics -
(from my wife) it's sooo cute, and the burgundy matches her drum kit, the bath tub and all my guitars - she couldn't be happier!

i'm having a lovely time with the little fella - such a huge range of tones from sparkle to very very heavy.
but everything comes out nice and creamy, like i remember from testing Orange tiny terrors etc.
i'm running it through a bin loaded with a 70's 12" 30W rola.
even with my cheap-o SG copy, it really shows up the slightest change in the guitar tone controls - i truly believe it can get away with just a single volume knob.
even a P-bass sounds great through it, but i could do with a 15" bin.

i'm gonna chuck a couple of mics in front of it over the next few days - i'll trial an sm57, md421 and a ribbon i think.

i've stuck my old EH big muff in front which gives me more flexibility in crunch and tone, but i am really very happy with the amp.

certainly i intend to mod it - i'll do the high boost + gain boost mod with standby switch thats available on the US evilbay. again, for flexibility.
but before i do that, i'm planning on fitting a stepped output attenuator on the rear panel.
an attenuator on a 5watt amp? well, to get true output tube crunch, you gotta have the volume b/w 10 and 2 oclock, and that's getting pretty loud.
works fine jamming with my wife on drums, though!

anyway - i'm going to keep having a play. i hope to post a couple of soundbites early next week (i should stick with an sm57 for that, so you know what you're hearing)

yeah ok - so i bought the drum kit for the studio. but amanda instantly decided it was actually for her.
so she's learning, having a bit of a dabble with her 20 basic rock beats. gives me a chance to get all chunky with some big power chords and lame half-assed solos.

but i am for real regarding the colour - the drum kit is burgundy, the bath tub is too. and the guitars are all varying shades of red.
we seem to have a theme going on.
