Finding a good room to record in

Hi guys

I'm wondering if you could offer me any advice. I'd like to find a really good acoustic space that I could hire on an hourly basis to record my tracks and wondering if anyone had any ideas of a place in Sydney. Its just an acoustic space I'd like, no gear or engineer required.

My idea is predicated on the following - I realise that despite my best efforts to apply acoustic treatment, my project studio room is just too small to sound good enough. Recordings just sound small and boxy regardless of what I've tried. On the other hand, I build all my own recording gear and am really proud of my circuit build work and very satisfied with the results of my mics, preamps, valve comps etc.

What this means is that I'd love to find a room that I could hire by the hour but bring in my own gear with me to record by myself. I tried renting the so called "recording rooms" inside band rehearsal places but they have really just been completely wall and floor carpeted jam rooms with recording gear sitting inside them and a few bass traps. Despite bringing my own gear and recording in those rooms the results didn't sound any different. Still wooly, boomy and small.

So this leaves me with this conundrum - I'd love to find a space that has nice acoustics - e.g. hard timber floor, maybe even a high ceiling, and with good acoustics but bring my gear to record on my own.

Is there any possibility in this idea? I'd be really appreciative of any advice.

You can often rent churches at an hourly rate, I rented St Lukes at Enmore last year for a photo shoot. Ask the pastor/rector/Jedi at your local church if they rent the hall perhaps.

BTW it's customary here for everyone to post their real name in their signature so that we all know who we are dealing with.

Thanks for that. I had thought about a church but am concerned that the "wetness" of such a space may make it hard to record things like vocals or acoustic guitars in.
