WTB- MCI500 ch strips

Postby andygriffiths » Sat Jul 09, 2016 9:12 pm

Hey Turtlerockers,

I'm chasing a pair of MCI 500 ch strips racked or un-racked. I had a pair put regretfully sold them about 2years ago. I miss the sound & that EQ! Let me know what you've got.

I don't want to derail this thread, but I've never understood the love that the 500 series pre's and EQ's get, specially the EQ's, I could never get them to give me what I wanted.

and yes I've mixed on a few different 500 series desks.

maybe someone can chime in and tell me.

I like the EQ - especially the top end..
and the list of amazing sounding famous albums mixed on them is testament.
I would not want 36 of them - but a pair is great in the arsenal

yea the top end is the best part...

I always thought those pre's sounded gluggy.

Tis a classic though

There is quite a lot of variation within the JH500 desk. 4 different revision frames and something like 7 different revision channel modules. The biggest differences is a lack of transformers and post fader EQ!

Post fader eq, what a strange idea, is this an American thing?
Why would a console be designed this way?
I thought my D&R was strange in having phase flip post insert....
Cheers,
Paul

Beats me! The JH500 must have been the first VCA automated desk in existence. Perhaps the decision had something to do with that?

The C & D models moved it to pre-fader on account of increased noise. The C & D models also changed the transformer I/O to be an optional extra rather than standard. The A & B models are loaded to the brim with stancor trannies.

I've spent a fair bit of time on the MCI 428 and found the Eq to be simple but very musical. Isn't that always the way :)
Have also owned MCI 500 strips and agree with the above comments.
Anyone on here own a 428? Can't be too many in the country..
