Someone to Troubleshoot FMR RNC in Sydney?
Hi - sorry about the lame first post, but I'm hoping someone could suggest a tech person in Sydney who could troubleshoot an FMR RNC compressor? I bought one second hand that I wanted to patch off a Great River mic pre, but despite the lights lighting up, there doesn't seem to be anyone at home as far as input/output signals are concerned in the RNC. I know these things are pretty cheap new, but if it was an inexpensive fix I'd probably repair it. I'm at Manly on the Northern Beaches, and totally a non-techie....

Rick - I checked on the FMR site and I see what you mean about the wiring setup. I tested just a standard 'Y' insert cable out of the patch socket on the back of the GR ME1NV into an outboard eq and everything came back fine into the GR, but try and do the same logical thing with the same cable into the FMR RNC and zilch!
Thanks Kris for the tip on nailing Phase to cost/time - I see also that they do the EQ mod for the Mackie Onyx desks (which I want done) for a fixed price around $220 (don't know whether that's a reasonable price or not but I figure there's some decent time involved in getting to the Mackie innards to do the mod, but I've absolutely got to know how long I'm without the board for).

Steve
you say "but try and do the same logical thing with the same cable into the FMR RNC and zilch" Does this mean you are using the same tip / ring / and sleeve cable/plugs.
The secret with the RNC is unbalance unbalance unbalance.......You must use a tip and sleeve plug only on the input and output sockets of the RNC. This means the signal path to and from the RNC will be unbalanced.
try this before heading off to a workshop
regards

Rob thanks for the advice on the cabling for the RNC - I'm happy to say that the problem was solved last evening. As it turns out, I'd inadvertently connected a 9V DC power supply to the unit instead of a 9V AC power supply, and the thing wasn't getting power to both rails - but enough juice anyway to look it was working while not actually working! I've got very few wall warts in my studio, but I've learnt now to pay closer attention to whether their AC or DC flavoured. Thanks for everyone's help (and a plug to Warren at Phase Engineering who diagnosed my problem via email while sitting in a hotel in Shengzu (spelling?) China!).
